Gronkowski backs Dak Prescott—Is he right about Prescott leading the Cowboys to 12 wins?

“Nobody can f—ing be the Cowboys GM better than me,” Jerry Jones once boldly declared to Pat McAfee this week. But even the most confident gamblers in Vegas might hesitate at the high-stakes game Jones is playing with Dak Prescott‘s future. Three straight 12-win seasons, yet the whispers of “not good enough” still echo through AT&T Stadium. Sound familiar, Jerry Jones?

Enter Rob Gronkowski, the tight end with a fistful of Super Bowl rings and a future spot in Canton. On the ‘Up & Adams Show’ with Kay Adams, Gronk didn’t just dip his toes into the QB debate – he cannonballed right in.

“I think they’re going to go over,” Gronkowski declared, predicting another 12-win season for the Cowboys. “They proved that the last what, four years? I think they’ve won 12 games.” His confidence in Dallas’s regular-season prowess was unmistakable.

But it’s not just about racking up wins. Jerry Jones, at 81, isn’t getting any younger, and his hunger for a Super Bowl is growing by the day. The Cowboys haven’t tasted that championship glory in nearly three decades. It’s enough to make a billionaire owner consider all his options.

One of those options? Shedeur Sanders, the CU Buffs’ quarterback, turning heads faster than a Texas twister. But Gronk’s not buying the hype. “Sanders will be up and coming,” he acknowledged, “but I don’t think the Cowboys will be able to draft Sanders. Sanders is going to be a top 15 pick and the Cowboys they’re going to go to the playoffs again this year.”

Gronkowski’s vote of confidence for Dak Prescott’s as the man for Dallas

Gronkowski didn’t stop at predictions. He went straight for the jugular of the Prescott debate. “Dak, I think he’ll be resigning with the Cowboys,” Gronk stated firmly. “I mean, the guy puts up numbers. It’s so hard to find a franchise quarterback… he knows the playbook in and out, he knows the system in and out, he’s been having great years.”

Have an interesting take?

And put up numbers, Prescott certainly has. In 2023, Prescott threw for 4,516 yards and an NFL-leading 36 touchdowns. He was the runner-up for NFL MVP, trailing only Lamar Jackson. Not too shabby for a quarterback, some fans want to run out of town.

But what about those playoff stumbles? The kind that makes Cowboys fans want to hide their faces under ten-gallon hats? Gronk’s not having it. “It’s a team game,” he emphasized. “When they lose in the playoff, it’s not just the quarterback’s fault, it’s everyone’s fault as a whole. You can’t just put the blame on Dak and everyone does because he’s the quarterback of the franchise.”

It’s a refreshing take in a league where quarterbacks often become scapegoats. Just ask Jerry Jones, who’s been playing a high-stakes game of contract chicken with his star QB. “What he is as a person and as a quarterback will age well,” Jones recently told Stephen A. Smith. “I think he’s the kind of quarterback that gets better and better.”

But here’s the rub – if no extension is reached by March, Prescott could hit free agency. And in a league starved for quality quarterbacks, he might just become the highest-paid player in NFL history. Talk about a Texas-sized headache for Jerry.

Jones isn’t tipping his hand just yet. “We don’t need to get this done before the season,” he stated about Prescott’s extension. “Because it’s in all of our interest, Dak, and everybody, to have a great season.” It’s put up or shut up time for the Cowboys QB.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the crucial point isn’t money – it’s time. “The holdup at this point from what I understand is about the years the Dallas Cowboys are willing to commit to,” she reported.

Gronkowski, though, sees the bigger vision. “When you’re already having success, you got to stick with it,” he said. “Especially in the NFL, every single team that’s on the top wants to win the Super Bowl, but it’s the hardest thing to do in sports.”

As for the Shedeur Sanders dream? It might be just that – a dream. Tad Prescott, Dak Prescott’s brother, pointed out the logistical nightmare: “If this is Dak’s last year in Dallas, and Cowboy fans want Shedeur, does he fall into the late 20s or later [draft pick]?” And let’s not forget Coach Prime himself. Deion Sanders made it clear he won’t be following his sons to the NFL. “Although I’m 100% sure that I’m not going to be their coach next year, I’m still going to have influence on their lives. Because I’m their father,” he said.

The Cowboys kick off their season on September 8 against the Cleveland Browns. By then, we’ll start to see if Prescott is worth the big bucks, or if Jerry Jones’ quarterback carousel will keep on spinning. One thing’s for sure – in Dallas, the drama never stops.
