Controversial call again? The Super Bowl LIX ended with the Eagles’s win! However, the start of the game stirred a nationwide outrage among many NFL fans, including Tom Brady, who was calling an SB game for the first time. The reason? The refs have once again given ammunition to critics who accuse them of favoring the Kansas City Chiefs.
During the first quarter, with the clock at 11:41, Jalen Hurts delivered a deep pass to Philadelphia Eagles’s AJ Brown. The WR came down with the big 32-yard gain, but unfortunately, was called for offensive pass interference. On this fourth-down catch he made, he was about to have extended Philadelphia’s opening drive. But he was seen hand-fighting with the Chiefs’ Trent McDuffie.
As a result of this, Brown’s hand went to McDuffie’s head, . This call from the refs didn’t suit well with many, including FOX’s color commentators, Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt. And the NFL legend could be heard saying, “don’t like that one bit” from the suite, while Burkhardt too supported his stance.

Tom Brady further expressed his stance by saying, “Oh, don’t like that one bit. This is too critical of a game…Let the players play. It should be decided on the field. Don’t like that call to start the game.” Nevertheless, as a result of this controversial call, the possession changed hands to the Chiefs after the Eagles’ second attempt at a fourth down play.
Even the NFL fans voiced their opinions against the refs, NFL and the Chiefs – something they have been doing this season. After this controversial call, the internet was flooded with “the game is rigged” comments. Now, whether it is rigged or not is a matter of another debate. But for now, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni too showed his frustration with the call.
Nick Sirianni followed Tom Brady’s path
When the flag was dropped on AJ Brown, the Eagles moved back 10 yards. They decided to punt the ball on 4th-and-12. However, in no time, the internet and Tom Brady were already questioning the calls. Even coach Nick Sirianni was seen melting down on the sidelines after this controversial call.

Being frustrated, Sirianni could be heard saying “that’s terrible” to ref Ron Tolbert after the OPI call on AJ Brown. However, it was too late. Nevertheless, he did get support from others. For instance, TV personality Stephen A. Smith took to his official X account and wrote, “Oh come on! You cannot call that pass interference call vs AJ Brown. That is just awful. So this is the kind of game it’s gonna be? Damn!” In addition, Field Yates too commented, “The first penalty of the game… And it’s just an awful call. C’mon.”
