Last year in February, FOX reporter Erin Andrews revealed how she felt bad when a misunderstanding on the sideline left a player hanging dry. She eventually called the player to apologize after it “ruined” her day. The host of “Thursday Night Football” on Prime Video has had quite a few interesting encounters involving ex-Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy and 49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan. As fate would have it she found herself at the center of another unfortunate moment involving Baker Mayfield.

Andrews re-signed with Fox on a three-year deal in July 2022 and has become a permanent fixture for the network’s NFL coverage. She usually conducts sideline interviews post-game and also sits down with players and coaches before the action. One such opportunity presented itself before the Week 18 clash between the Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints.

She had the chance to talk with Bucs’ star QB Baker Mayfield and get an insight on what is ahead for him and the franchise. The interview went smoothly…or so we thought. The truth is Andrews was struggling to speak both during their pre-game and post-game interview. She shared why things nearly went awry for the veteran sportscaster.

The FOX reporter shared with Charissa Thompson on the Calm Down Podcast how a bad experience with retinol, a form of Vitamin A that’s used as a skincare product, the night before her interview, left her in a difficult spot. She was left with a swollen face on one side and had an apparent acne breakout. This led to her issuing an apology to Mayfield on the podcast.

“Baker Mayfield, this is a public apology to you. I gotta stop. Enough is enough,” Andrews stated. She explained, Night before I leave to go to Tampa, do the sit down with Baker Mayfield, do the week 18 game, going through my stuff, packing it up. I’m like, huh, some retinol. I’m going to put it on, slathered it on, go to bed, get on a plane.” However, she didn’t anticipate the adverse effect it would have on her skin.

Andrews had acne all over her face the next morning. “I’m like, ‘What? What just happened?’ Everything affects my skin. I think I’m trying to be preventative. Instead, I create an entire situation.”

“I’m sitting down with Baker, already talked to you. Left side is swollen, got a big, this one (pointing to her face) already got it injected today. Great. Trying to, you know, like do s**t with my mouth. Try to smile so you can’t see it,” added the Fox reporter. The problems didn’t end here for Andrews. During her postgame interview with the Bucs QB after their 27-19 win over the Saints, the 46-year-old reporter had more issues to deal with.

“Sunday post-game, I got f*****g braille all over my face. Right here, I already got it injected. It’s like I wanted to take the whole side of my hair and just say, ‘hey Baker, congratulations on clinching the division and being in the playoffs,'” she shared while playfully hiding her face in the podcast video. It looks experienced some sort of acne or pimple breakout and she has addressed it by getting both sides of her face injected.

Have an interesting take?

This isn’t the first time Erin Andrews has found herself in an awkward and uneasy situation. In 2024, speaking on the same podcast, she narrated how she had an embarrassing encounter with an unnamed player on the sidelines.

She mentioned that a player behind her was waiting to be interviewed following a game but the show was already going off-air. “We’ve talked about it. If there was ever a situation and we felt so bad… like I had a situation where a certain player was coming up behind me and I didn’t know. He thought I was going to interview him and we had to get off air.”

Andrews then decided to call the player and apologize after, “It ruined my day for three straight days.” She recalled, “I ended up having to call him and I was just like, literally, ‘I need you to know you’re like one of my favorite players and I was doing that because we had to get off air, not because I didn’t want to talk to you.’”

As McCarthy emerged from the locker room at halftime after letting his players know what he thought of their performance, Andrews began her interview with an apology.

“Standing in the hallway waiting for Mike McCarthy to come out after he addressed his team and trying to stop the bleeding on both sides of the ball in that Ravens-Cowboys game, I looked at him as he walked out and I said, ‘Coach, I am so sorry.’ And he goes, ‘Why are you sorry? This is your job.’ I loved him so much for that. He’s just so lovely and sweet.”

Andrews also experienced a tricky situation with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan in 2023. During their walk-off interview prior to halftime at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 13, Andrews found herself “trying to scoot” with Shanahan in a congested tunnel. With players coming into the tunnel, she had to get real close to Shanahan and felt she was “body-slamming him and then breathing in his face.” She said she planned to apologize to the HC via a Zoom call.

Meanwhile, fans were full of appreciation for her Baker Mayfield interview which he conducted smoothly despite an uneasy situation.
