If someone asked you to make a list of the top 5 quarterbacks, whose names would you choose? Names like Lamar Jackson and Tom Brady might come to mind. But what about Patrick Mahomes? While many see one of the greatest QBs in him, others feel he is nothing but an overrated gimmick. However, for a moment, let us backtrack to the Chiefs without Mahomes.
Alex Smith had been with the team for four seasons, but they still didn’t make it to a single conference championship game. The QB was getting older and his contract had only two more years left. The Kansas City Chiefs had to prepare for the future without him. Eventually, they landed Mahomes, and he was just what they were looking for. The former Texas Tech player was mentored by Smith and it won’t be too bold to say that he is one of the many faces behind the now-star QB’s success. But why does former NCAA player Trent McGaughey think the KCC player is overrated?

Football content creator Trent McGaughey posted his podcast clip on his official Instagram account on May 28. From his perspective, the 2017 10th overall draftee was only successful because of the ideal situation that he was handed when he was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. McGaughey opined,
“Man, we overrate Patrick Mahomes. He’s in the perfect situation ever… If you put Josh Allen on the Chiefs in 2017 & he sits behind Alex Smith, you are getting the exact same player. When he (Mahomes) first starts, you have Travis Kelce, Andy Reid, Sammy Watkins, and Chris Conley. All these guys are your receivers, so you cannot know what coverage you’re reading & they’re gonna make plays regardless.”
While McGaughey did not sideline the capabilities of Mahomes, calling him “uber-talented.” Yet doubts prevailed. “I don’t truthfully think there’s this huge gap between Mahomes, Allen, & Burrow. I think the situation is the gap, in my opinion.”
McGaughey is a former 3-star Houston Cougars tight end, who was compelled to retire in 2023 due to an injury. Hanging his cleats up, he wrote on X: “I never thought I would have to talk about this so early in my career. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I still have major pain in my right hand, injury that I’ve had since October 2020… I will have to retire from the game of football and pursue other dreams that I have.”

His perspective on the matter takes one back to January 2023, when the coach—known from the Netflix series Last Chance U, Jason Brown—had a similar opinion. “Patrick Mahomes is overrated, and no one wants to talk about it.” Brown said, “Please break down the 41 touchdowns that everyone’s so enamored with. He’s late consistently. I want Kansas City to hear me loud and clear.”
These negative opinions bring a new outlook to Mahomes’ career amidst the usual waves of praise the QB garners. But let us compare Mahomes and Allen for a quick minute.
Patrick Mahomes | Josh Allen | |
Games | 96 | 94 |
Completions | 2386 | 1989 |
Attempts | 3590 | 3145 |
Yards Covered | 28,424 | 22,703 |
TD | 219 | 167 |
Passer Rating | 103.5 | 92.2 |
Remember how McGaughey mentioned the trio of Mahomes, Allen, and Burrow? The Bengals QB is comparatively new to the scene. The young star has only played 4 seasons and 52 games, covering 14,083 yards and completing 1288 passes in 1895 attempts. His TD number stands at a grand 97, with 98.6 being his passer rating. Alas! The numbers, despite all odds, seem to be drastically in favor of the Chiefs’ captain. However, what does Josh Allen think about Patrick Mahomes?

The Buffalo Bills quarterback too believes that the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the AFC. In an interview on ‘Kyle Brandt’s Basement’ last year, Allen acknowledged Mahomes’ top spot on a power ranking list, which placed Allen and Joe Burrow in the second tier.
He stated, “Until me or [Joe Burrow] or anybody else can win a Super Bowl, I think Pat’s kinda the clear No. 1 right now. He’s been playing at such a high level for so long. He’s got the rings to prove it.”
Until now, Patrick Mahomes has won three Super Bowls, while Joe Burrow and Josh Allen haven’t won any. On the opposite end of the spectrum, when Mahomes was asked about Allen, the 2023 Super Bowl MVP replied, “Josh is a great dude. I respect the way that he plays football and just the guy that he is.”
