Two gaps to fill in! Sean Payton’s Denver Broncos have two glaring roster holes that need urgent attention. One is the team’s running back position, which requires a veteran player to come up and lead. Next, they don’t have a punter. And if the reports are true, the Orange team is not interested in the remaining free-agent punters. So, what are they up to now? Well, here comes a UFL answer!
According to the reports, as Sean Payton’s team is out on the free-agents, they might look for other options available. And with that, we meant the team may be eyeing a UFL punter, or if not that, then a newly drafted player. But the NFL 2025 Draft is yet to start from April 25. Before that, Payton and the squad have an offer coming up from the front.
Former Broncos punter, Marquette King, indicated on social media that he is ready to make a comeback with his team if they allow it. This happened when a Broncos fan randomly asked a question to King – “Hey @MarquetteKing are you available next season?” To which, King replied, “Im in a way different headspace at this point in my life and would be glad to make a return to the Broncos organization and rewrite a new experience after my season in the UFL if they’re open to it.” That’s a cheerful update for the Broncos.

At 36, Marquette King isn’t giving up. He signed with the Broncos in 2018, but an injury cut his time short. And it wasn’t just physical – his mental battles took a toll too. He admitted in 2022 that he is “not fighting to get in a league that ignores the resume I’ve created that’s better than over half of the punters in the NFL,” while dealing with a thigh injury and internal conflicts.
Reports suggest King faced multiple hurdles. Some say it was personality clashes with coaches. Others point to injuries. King himself believes discrimination played a role. But is that really the case? That’s up for debate. But looking back, King has been open about his struggles.
“I always think about where I was when I got let go from the Raiders at the time. Was really going through it to where I was bouncing between anger and frustration. I mean, I think back to that time, and it was because I let what other people thought about me bother me to that point.” Despite being a top performer, he felt pushed out of the league. But now, he’s ready for a comeback. Same team. Same role. New opportunities.
And fans are all for it. Some even want to see him with teams like Tampa or the Raiders, both of which could use a solid punter. So, will Marquette King get his chance? Time will tell. But King wants to go to Sean Payton’s Denver after 7 years, and this isn’t the first time he has wished for it.

Can Marquette King be the answer to the Broncos' punting woes, or is it a risky move?

Sean Payton’s Broncos were approached by Marquette King earlier too?
After his 2018 Broncos episode, instead of stepping away, Marquette King kept going. He first played with the XFL’s BattleHawks. Then he joined the UFL’s Arlington Renegades in 2023. Now, with NFL teams looking for talent, he’s open to a reunion with Denver. But earlier too, in 2022, he had the same request from Sean Payton’s franchise.

The team had parted ways with former special teams coordinator Tom McMahon in 2022. So, King picked up his X account and wrote: “Now that McMahon is gone I’m down to pick up where we left off. Tell them to Call my agent.” Why? Well, in 2018, McMahon was the one who reportedly signed rookie punter Colby Wadman to push King. Hence, there might be a strained relationship between them. But when McMahon left, he wanted to come back. And once again, when Sean Payton and his team need a punter—King is ready!

In his NFL career, King led the NFL in punt yards in 2014, earned All-Pro honors in 2016, won an XFL title in 2023, and just made the All-UFL Team in 2024. He’s proven he can still deliver. So, if Sean Payton’s Broncos need an immediate punter, to ease the juggling issue of RB and punter, the answer might be right in front of them.
