Is Baker Mayfield finally stepping out of Tom Brady's shadow with his stellar performances?

Leading the NFL in catches (43), Buccaneers star WR Chris Godwin had a field day in New Orleans as his team came away with a 51-27 victory. Putting his career-best numbers, Godwin forged a deadly partnership with Bucs QB Baker Mayfield as they condemned the Saints to their 5th straight defeat this season. A team that was flying high for the first two weeks in the NFL was subject to humiliation, courtesy of Godwin and Mayfield’s connection.

Godwin, who is on track to record his best season yet in the NFL, spoke about his connection with Mayfield on The Insiders. “Second year working together. We’ve gone through some highs and some lows in terms of learning what each other is looking for. Both of us we’re very smart players. We’re just trying to win. We have a good connection going that goes with a lot of hard work and time put in.” That hard work Godwin referred to might be doing some exceptional things this season.

Over six games, he has already caught 43 catches for 511 yards while adding five TDs on 53 targets. As Godwin continued on his connection, “I’m excited about where we are, but I know there’s a lot more in store for us.” Speaking about ‘lot more,’ if the Bucs WR maintains such numbers for this season. He is slated to finish with a projection of 122 catches, 1,448 yards and 14 TDs. Although this remains a long shot, considering the teams they would be soon paired against. (Chiefs and Ravens)

Former Bucs QB turned Fox Sports analyst Tom Brady was equally impressed with Godwin after his sensational night in New Orleans. Sharing his list of three players that caught his eye last week, Brady spoke highly about the 28-year-old. “My guy Chris in Tampa, had himself a day against the Saints. Breaking tackles. Running through defenders. The Bucs put up 50 in New Orleans. I never even did that.” Well, getting praised by the “GOAT” is not something that Godwin could have expected. But considering the numbers he had been putting up this season, he deserves all the praise he can conjure.

Elsewhere, his partner, Baker Mayfield, who had the responsibility of filling up Brady’s shoes, is doing equally well this season. As former Bucs TE Rob Gronkowski heaps praise on the 29-year-old.

Have an interesting take?

Having won four Super Bowl titles with Tom Brady, we all know the connection Rob Gronkowski had with the seven-time Super Bowl Champion. Although it’s still early to compare their connection with Godwin and Mayfield, the Bucs QB has surely been doing some magical things since taking over from Brady in Tampa.

As Gronk shares on Dudes on Dudes podcast, “He’s the ultimate teammate. He’s like the ultimate locker room guy. Quarterbacks aren’t really like us. He’s a quarterback who will go have a beer at the bar get f—– up with you. You can just tell he’s a guy like that. He’s a guy that’s cheering you on.” Well, outside of his abilities on the pitch, Gronk shared some insight about the time they spent together working out in Tampa.

What I like about the dude is he’s just a normal dude. He just wants to have a good time. He actually signed a three-year, $100 million deal the morning of and then he came to the workout session that day, and it was like nothing happened.” But this season, something special is happening with Mayfield leading the Bucs. As the 29-year-old has already racked up 1,489 passing yards while completing 70.9% of his passes.

Can Mayfield continue to put up these numbers while helping his teammates the way he had been until week 6? Guess we will find out soon as the Bucs prepare for the Ravens challenge this week in Tampa.
