When Alex Smith passed the torch to Patrick Mahomes in 2018, a few expected the moment to be historic. But by the end of the season, the number was significantly higher. The newly promoted QB1 went all the way to clinch both the NFL MVP and Offensive Player Of The Year award. Three years into the charge, Mahomes kick-started the countdown for an all-time NFL record. Now, in another two years to 2023, it’s Mahomes’ world, and we are just living in it.
As the Chiefs prepare to take on the Broncos for a second time in six weeks, multiple records linger over the Kansan quarterback. The Mile High on Sunday could become a part of history unless the Broncos decide to go Super Saiyan. If they do not, however, Patrick Mahomes will be entering the final lap of his countdown. The countdown to determine the king of quarterbacks.
Patrick Mahomes is one sunrise away from history

No quarterback in NFL history has started his career 13-0 against any particular opponent. But that fact lies potentially just one sunrise away from being irrelevant, as Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs travel to Denver for a Week 8 game on Sunday. The Broncos have been a victim of Mahomes 12 out of 12 times they faced off, and tomorrow’s clash could be the groundbreaker.
Taking things a bit further, the record for a quarterback’s longest win streak against a particular opponent at any point in his career is over 40 years old. It is held by Dolphins‘ Bob Griese, who went on a 17-game win streak against the Buffalo Bills between 1967 and 1980. If someone can top it, it has to be Mahomes. And believe us when we say it’s more probable than possible.
But no matter how unbelievable it sounds, things don’t end there. It might already be a lot to ask from a 28-year-old, but that’s just how good Mahomes is. It turns out there’s another elusive record that has stood as a testament to a player’s unmatched dominance in his territory. Specifically, it accounts for a quarterback’s winning streak against his division rivals. And Patrick Mahomes, expectedly, is the only active quarterback chasing the record. But certainly, it will take even Super Mahomes a few years to catch up to it.

This prestigious record is currently held by Bears‘ Jim McMahon, who crafted it between 1983 and 1987 against his NFC Central opponents, with a 19-game win streak. The closest ones to McMahon are the Colts‘ Andrew Luck and the Broncos‘ Peyton Manning, both of whom went on a 14-game win streak before getting derailed. Our main protagonist, Mahomes, stands at a 13-game win streak that started in Week 10 of the 2021 NFL season.
With tomorrow’s clash going as planned, the Chiefs quarterback enters the final round for this record, too. That’s two birds with one stone! But he will have to wait till the 2025 season before crossing the 19-game mark, and that too by remaining undefeated. This may not be a big ask from the Chiefs, who are reigning over AFC West, AFC Conference, and Super Bowl Champions. They are on their seventh division title defense, and the 30-to-be in 2025 quarterback could make it ninth by then.
