The last time the Chicago Bears won a playoff game was in 2011. After that, they’ve just managed to appear twice in the playoffs. Once in 2018 and once in 2020. Since then, the Bears have been in a drought on all fronts. Their QB situation isn’t working out, and the team had a dismal 7-10 season. However, Ryan Poles, the GM, is trying to make sure that the team breaks that curse.
In the wake of this NFL Scouting Combine, the NFL Network reporter Stacey Dales shared a conversation that she had with the Bears GM. They talked about the situation with Justin Fields and the reporter also shared a Patrick Mahomes anecdote coming from Poles.

The host raised a question about whether Ryan Poles had an “open mind” going into the drafting season. Dales pointed out how the Bears have a number 1 pick, but Poles will not go in blindly to draft a quarterback. This is because, sometimes, even the top 10 QB prospects might end up being a disappointment. For Poles, it’s all about the “process”.
Dales elaborated on the situation and mentioned how Poles’ time with the Kansas City Chiefs has refined his choice when picking a QB. After spending time with Brett Veach and the Chiefs and witnessing Patrick Mahomes getting drafted firsthand, Poles is out to chase the same rush, given that the prospect has some oomph to them.
“Historically you can see quarterbacks be taken in the top 10 and be misses. Now here’s what I would say about polls he spent 13 years in Kansas City. He was a part of uh you know the Brett Veach group and that brought in Patrick Mahomes who fell in love with this generational Talent when he was very young. Even before his days at Texas Tech,” said Dales.
“It was a long process and that’s what Poles talked to me about, the process. And how they understood the talent was there and it was remarkable talent when you consider the offense, he played in, he threw the ball quite a bit at Texas Tech, Patrick Mahomes did, but it was the character that they became really linked to,” added the reporter.
QBs have been in high demand and most of the teams are not happy with theirs. The New York Jets put Zach Wilson up for trade. Hopefully, the Bears don’t go that far.

Justin Fields recently unfollowed the Chicago Bears on Instagram. People are speculating whether this is the first step towards a departure. Fields defended himself by saying that he doesn’t want to look at work-related things while he is on vacation. Since this approach does make sense, the Bears might not put up Fields for trade.

Right now, the most popular speculation is that the Bears will draft Caleb Williams and keep him under Justin Fields’ shadow. But from the interview Poles had with Stacey Dales, it seems like the GM won’t rush towards hiring a QB. As Dales explained earlier, maybe it is the “process” that Dales is interested in, hoping to discover a resurgence of another Patrick Mahomes.
