Dan Campbell's guilt over Goff—Is loyalty more important than performance in the NFL?

It’s not hard to believe that Jared Goff cooked the Seattle Seahawks tonight. The 42-29 win prompted the Lions head coach Dan Campbell to hold another customary locker room huddle honoring the game MVPs. Sadly, and surprisingly, Jared Goff wasn’t one of them. How can that be?

Well, Dan Campbell handed the game ball to someone else, not knowing that Goff went 18 for 18 tonight. Well, his conscious kicked in later as the Lions head coach noted, “I just gave the game ball to somebody else, so I feel awful right now.” Campbell further added, “I knew he played heck of a game, I did not realize he was perfect. I did not know he was literally 18 for 18. But I knew he played really well; you could feel it.”

Well, you would expect Goff to receive all sorts of rewards and recognitions after he broke the NFLs record of throwing 18 passes without an interception. That’s the most in the NFL to this date! In fact, some would say that this might have been the most perfect game in Detroit’s sports history. Well, let’s forget about his 292 yard, 2TD game and focus on that TD pass that the Lions QB received from Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Surely, that must have caught the Seahawks off guard. Goff faked the shovel pass and handed it to St. Brown instead and headed to the end zone. It was too late for the Seahawks to realize what happened. The Lions receiver didn’t waste any time in throwing that 8-yard TD pass to his quarterback. The funny thing is, Amon-Ra St. Brown has a better passer rating than Geno Smith.

Coming back to Goff’s situation again, if he didn’t get the game ball, then who did? That the magic question. Well, the coach couldn’t ignore what Kerby Joseph and Jameson Williams did throughout the game and gave them the souvenir. Goff’s fate was intertwined with both from the get-go.

Have an interesting take?

That 70-yard touchdown pass from Goff to Williams was a sight to behold. With 2:52 left in the third quarter, Williams did his team another favor and ran it in to further extend the lead to 35-20. It was a barrage of touchdowns after that play, with both teams unyielding to give up their spot. But the best team won in the end.

But the way in which Detroit won was commendable. Yes, St. Brown’s 8-yard pass was something not right out of the playbook, but it was Kerby Joseph who sealed the game with his jaw dropping interception of Geno Smith. An astonishing thing about the whole game is the Seahawks led the Detroit in team stats but still couldn’t get the best of Jared Goff and his Lions pack.

With that, the Detroit Lions handed a huge fat L to the Seattle Seahawks. In fact, this was Seattle’s first loss of the season. The Detroit team is visiting the AT&T Stadium to play against the Dallas Cowboys as they enjoy a bye week coming up. Let us know your favorite moments from the game in the comments below.
