Is there still a possibility for the Redskins name to make a comeback in Washington? Well, it could be, considering the Hail Mary the Commanders have pulled off in the Senate. It was a rollercoaster of a week for the Commanders, who wanted RFK Stadium as one of their options for a likely relocation. Anyone who didn’t know, the Commanders who were previously recognized as the Redskins played their football at RFK from 1961 to 1996.
Well, it was a golden period for the team from the country’s capital. As they made five trips to the Super Bowl while winning three of them at that site. But then a move to Maryland, where they currently play at Northwest Stadium, hasn’t really been a lucky charm for them. So their managing Partner Josh Harris, who bought the team in 2023, always wanted to keep RFK as their top priority. Why wouldn’t he?
Harris himself has been a childhood supporter and has an emotional attachment to the RFK site. And when the news of the Senate passing his bill came on Saturday morning. He released a statement expressing his excitement for the future, “We are extremely grateful that our elected officials have come together on a bipartisan basis to give Washington D.C. the opportunity to decide on the future of the RFK stadium site.” Well, to make things clearer, there wouldn’t be any federal funding for this bill that some of them may have thought of, including Elon Musk.

On Wednesday, he spread some misinformation that made headlines, stating that Congress would allocate $3B of the taxpayers’ money to build a new stadium. But this isn’t about taking federal funds; instead, it’s only about extending the lease. After their contract with Maryland ends in 2027, the Commanders could extend that deal. It would help them complete their new stadium, probably around 2030.
As the Commanders are possibly going back to their historic RFK site. Their fans have a demand to bring their Redskins name back, which was a part of their glory days.

Fans of Washington feel they are going through an identity crisis. The team that once used to dominate the NFL is failing to live up to its old expectations. Although this season, the Commanders will surely make the playoffs because of their 9-5 record after 15 weeks in the NFL. Their fans aren’t really satisfied with the name change back in 2020. After public outrage with widespread protest against racial injustice, Washington had to drop their Redskins logo. They decided to go with the Commanders in a major identity reshuffle.
However, when the news of Josh Harris securing the RFK site bill dropped on Saturday. Those fans are yet again rallying for the Redskins name to return. One of them on X wrote, “Only wanna hear if you’re going back to the Redskins name.” Now, that fan wasn’t the only one who demanded the return of the Native American heritage name. There was another who probably joked, “You’ll get a new stadium when you change back to Redskins.”
While some demanded the return of the Redskins, another went into early celebrations mood, tweeting, “Redskins are back.” Although there’s still time for that conversation to happen. An account on X demanded an instant return of the Redskins by adding a picture of their previous logo on the helmet, “Bring the redskins back asap. Not tomorrow, not after breakfast right now.” But not to spoil the fans’ expectations. There isn’t any real chance of the Redskins name coming back.

As Josh Harris himself cleared the air back in August, “For obvious reasons, the old name can’t come back.” So, for now, the fans can look forward to at least playing at their old RFK site. And the conversation surrounding the Redskins name is a different ball game.
