Is Jerry Jones more interested in headlines than building a winning Cowboys team? What's your take?

Jerry Jones’ antics and faltered off-season promises have irked Dallas Cowboys fans deeply. The cat is out of the bag, and it looks like Dak Prescott isn’t getting a contract extension anytime soon. From “we want Dak” to “all in,” the billionaire business tycoon has failed to address any of his promises.

But why give hope to fans and then take it away? As Chris Broussard put it, it’s Jones’ tactic to keep America’s team relevant in the fast-evolving NFL. No doubt the Cowboys succeeded in staying in the limelight. But at what cost? Broussard revealed it all in a harsh take on First Things First.

“It’s Jerry Jones’s FAULT that they have not won a Super Bowl in 30 years. The Cowboys have foolhardy priorities and the Cowboys FINALLY, are FAKE and FRAUDULENT contenders. That leaves an F and that’s the only grade I give you on this quote because it ain’t about being a drama or a soap opera, Jerry Jones. It’s about winning football games,” said Broussard, as he rated Cowboys an F for FAKE and FRAUDULENT.” But, before he said this, Broussard criticized the team owner for his attention-seeking tendencies.

“The problem is that their priorities are out of order. He [Jerry Jones] just said it. It works. How does it work when you haven’t won a Super Bowl in what, nearly 30 years? But it works because they are relevant, and the goal of the Cowboys and I’ve been saying it from the rooftops, finally, people are starting to catch up,” said Chris Broussard. The people are starting to catch up fairly quickly indeed.

All this fuss came after Jerry Jones’ recent presser from Oxnard, where he implied that as much as he wants Dak Prescott, he cannot afford him anymore. This is especially concerning because the Dallas Cowboys had the lowest spending this off-season. Jones and his cohorts have been all talk and no action so far.

If they knew they didn’t want Dak, they should have signed a quarterback to replace him. They didn’t sign a receiver that can match CeeDee Lamb’s caliber either. They had problems at the running back position, which they addressed by bringing Ezekiel Elliott back (which feels like a placeholder for the running back position). There are O-Line concerns too.

Have an interesting take?

The problem is, that the Cowboys are not focused on their Big 3. The Dak-CeeDee combo has been carrying the Dallas Cowboys for the past three years. They’ve been 12-5 in the regular season for the past three years. The problem with extending Prescott is that he counts against a $55.1 million cap hit this year. It’s only going downhill from here because Micah Parsons wants big money too, and rightfully so.

It’s embarrassing now that Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love secured respectable contracts with the Miami Dolphins and the Green Bay Packers. The problem is, that the Dallas Cowboys have $11 million remaining in cap space. Their QB counts against $55.1 million in cap space. The solution is, they can still fix their salary cap issues by extending Prescott. His extension will result in decreased cap numbers over the coming years.

The Cowboys owner recently mentioned, “Sometimes you look at your account and you’re loaded with money in there that day, but you know you’ve incurred bills that have three times the bills that you have money in your account, but that day it looks like you got a lot of money. Well, you have to be disciplined about spending what’s in your account if you know you got all these bills.”

It’s pretty clear where this is heading. Again, from going “all in” to acknowledging the naysayers to basically admitting that the Cowboys’ wallets are empty, their off-season has been a bumpy, disastrous ride. Jones even got a bit passive-aggressive during his recent presser.

Jerry Jones shattering promises amidst CeeDee Lamb’s absence

If Dak Prescott is throwing to CeeDee and the receiver is not there, is the practice even worth it? The Cowboys star WR hasn’t been showing up for training since the OTAs. Many will even say that the Cowboys’ season is doomed this year. If it was not apparent, it became so when Jerry Jones finally gave in to the media after heaps of criticism and apprehension.

“I’m just gonna say this to y’all, give me some credit, OK? You don’t think I’m good with numbers? You think I know how to add and subtract? Do I know how to talk? And sell? I realize all the criticism and I understand it. As a matter of fact, I try to stir it up. And I have since I got here. That’s good. Be relevant. It works,” said the Cowboys owner at the Oxnard training camp.

The only literal line of defense is Micah Parsons. He might stay with the Cowboys next year. However, there’s a catch. The Dallas team has offered him a position as a DE next year. This will basically save them $3 million in cap space. But that’s not nearly enough to feed everyone. Mike Florio made it even more controversial in his recent column on PFT saying, “When it comes to paying great young players, Jones and company are: (1) cheap; (2) short-sighted; and (3) not as smart as they think they are.”

Also, every skill position player is in the race to become the highest paid and they won’t take no for an answer. Just look at the drama that’s going on with Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers. If Dak balls out this season, will the Cowboys still keep him around?

There’s also the curious case of Mike McCarthy and people stepping on Jerry Jones because he didn’t sign Bill Belichick when he had the chance. Honestly, that’s all right because Jerry Jones’ attention-hogging tendencies might not have gelled well with Bill Belichick’s stern attitude.
