Mason Rudolph caught in a fake DM scandal—are we too quick to believe everything online?

Mason Rudolph might just be neck deep in water for what he might have in the middle of the game against the Miami Dolphins. He used his phone! As big of a deal as it is, it’s not what he’s in trouble for. Well, we know that it’s not allowed to use a phone in the middle of the game but that’s just the start of it.

Apparently, he DM’ed a Dolphins fan’s girlfriend and he couldn’t just let it slide. He immediately shared Rudolph’s DM to his girlfriend and it’s not looking good. This might just be the perfect definition of getting caught in 4K. But there are some inconsistencies here and there.

The video was posted with captions: “And Mason Rudolph dmed my girlfriend a couple weeks ago”¦” and the video shows the Dolphins fangirl showing her Instagram DM. Guess who’s on top? It’s Mason Rudolph’s DM that says: “still in Miami?” What’s surprising is that the DM landed just 3 minutes ago, which doesn’t align with the captions of the post on X.

Maybe Rudolph texted her a “couple weeks ago,” but we’re not entirely sure what to make of this. Players are not supposed to use any electronic gadgets like a phone or a laptop unless it’s not issued by the league. The facts just don’t add up here because Rudolph’s display picture is different on his original account. However, it’s possible that Rudolph changed his picture during that time.

This might as well have been a screenshot taken at an earlier date, otherwise, it would suggest that the Tennessee Titans quarterback texted her at halftime in the game against the Miami Dolphins. We can’t really tell whether the video is fake or not, but we can tell the ramifications of it if the scenario in the video comes out to be true. In the past, clubs have been fined about $50k and players have been fined a minimum amount of $5.3k after the NFL “observed several electronic device policy violations this season.”

Have an interesting take?

So, what rules does the NFL have in place to counteract these violations?

Inside NFL’s no gadgets policy

The NFL implores the clubs to do their due diligence and check every player for handheld devices like phones, laptops, tablets, smart watches etc. That’s done to ensure that crucial information such as injury updates, or next plays being called, don’t get leaked ahead of time. This might also cause the teams to lose any competitive advantage that they have.

“Clubs are strongly encouraged to put pregame processes in place to ensure compliance. This should include verifying that each individual with bench area, locker room, and coaches’ booth access are not wearing or possessing a prohibited electronic device (e.g., cell phone, Apple Watch, Fitbit, etc.) at kickoff,” the NFL wrote in its Dec. 2 memo.

Moreover, only certain staff members like medical professionals are allowed to use cell phones for work purposes only, and only in under certain conditions. Even then, per Mike Florio, the league is “terrified” of doctors accidentally leaking information about a player’s injury over the phone.

So, you can see that the NFL is pretty strict about it. It doesn’t make any sense that Mason Rudolph would take such a risk in the middle of the game. What’s your take on the rumors? Let us know below.
