The Philadelphia Eagles dropped their playoffs, with a lifeless 32-9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While promoting the upcoming thriller, the Australian NRL rugby season, the offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, sat for an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports to reveal the reason why the Eagles couldn’t soar higher this season.
The NRL Telstra Premiership season is about to grace American soil for the first time, and that too at the host city of the Super Bowl LVIII. The season is about to kick off from March 2, 2024, featuring a game between the Sea Eagles and the Rabbitohs; and the Roosters and the Broncos, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Mailata, who was a Rabbitohs player before his NFL career, informed EssentiallySports that it would be something that the Americans haven’t seen before. And he is extremely excited for the “refreshing” season, especially after dealing with the Eagles’ arguably miserable 2023 year.
In the exclusive chat with EssentiallySports, Mailata admitted the Eagles’ fault in the season. He revealed the primary reason for the Eagles’ loss was the “execution and communication.” The 26-year-old offensive lineman said, “We didn’t execute. There was a lot of miscommunication just from coaches, from a coaching standpoint and then the players standpoint we weren’t executing. And that’s a combination, that’s a bad combination and that’s a recipe for disaster. We didn’t address those issues enough. And that’s why we slowly bled out.”

Due to a disappointing end to the 2023 season, losing six of their last seven games, Mailata knew that something was going to change in their franchise. Soon after the blowout against the Bucs, the offensive coordinator Brian Johnson was dismissed. And now, for the next season, they have hired former Cowboys and Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Earlier Mailata has expressed his excitement, hoping Moore will lead the Eagles in a new direction. The Eagles hoped that the direction would be reminiscent of their strong start with a 10-1 record in the season. Any deviation could result in increased criticism, blame in Philadelphia, the firing of the staff, or maybe even worse than all.

The Eagles had a rough playoff loss, mirroring their struggles since December. Their spectacular season started as defending NFC champs but turned into a downfall soon after their Bye Week. Poor performance, detachment, injuries, losses to weaker teams, and uncompetitive blowouts marked the Eagles’ collapse. Head coach Nick Sirianni faced uncertainty, with the team’s late-season slide prompting questions about what comes next.
Even the playoff opener saw questionable game plans, missed opportunities, and defensive lapses, leading to a definite loss to the Buccaneers. In the third quarter of the game, the Eagles faced a challenging situation. Jalen Hurts, under pressure from the Bucs’ pass rush, unintentionally grounded the ball in his end zone, resulting in a safety. Shortly after, poor tackling and pursuit allowed Trey Palmer to score a 56-yard TD for Tampa Bay. By then, with the score 25-9, the game was almost over, and there was no coming back for the Eagles’ side after that.
