Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are shining—Is Drake Maye falling behind in the rookie QB race?

Since the day a certain 7-time Super Bowl champion vacated his position at Gillette Stadium, the New England Patriots haven’t been able to find his replacement. However, by leaving the Carolina blue tie and wearing a dark blue Patriots hat for the first time, Drake Maye could be the successor to Brady’s legacy. After Maye walked into Foxborough, some local newspapers rejoiced by calling it Maye Day on their front pages.

Although Maye might be the highest-ever selection for the Patriots at No. 3 overall, he could be lacking behind his rookie QB competitors, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels. Speaking on this topic, an ex-patriot, Ross Tucker, shared his views on the show Gojo and Golic, hosted by Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr., stating, He started every game for North Carolina the last 2 years. I guess I wonder when a guy is in that situation. If he’s still raw, as everybody seems to say, why is he still so raw? After as much college experience as he had, it’s not like he’s one of these one-year starters like Trabis or Mark Sanchez or whatever played a lot of football for the Tarheels.”

Maye took home the 2022 ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year after he threw for 4,321 passing yards, 38 TDs, and seven interceptions. Adding to that total, 698 rushing yards and 7 TDs brought him his first-team All-ACC selection playing for the North Carolina Tar Heels.

However, the Patriots have rather taken an ultra-conservative approach to Drake Maye’s involvement under HC Jerod Mayo. To which Tucker cited, “Well, I think they are gonna give him some time, and I think that’s why they signed Jacoby Brissett. Brissett was a good QB to be able to bring in here, and I think he can win a game or two for them.

Even though Tucker is putting Brissett above Maye in the QB pecking order after he notched up a passer rating of 146.8 with 224 yards and 3 TDs last season, there could be other reasons. Somewhere else on the horizon, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels have already started strongly for their respective teams in the NFL community.

Can Drake Maye put up with Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels throughout the season?

Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall draft pick for the Chicago Bears, produced an outstanding performance in his first pre-season game against the Bills. On the back of his sensational passing abilities that resulted in a 26-yard thunderous throw to TE Cole Kmet, an NFL analyst, Greg Cosell, expressed his views speaking on the Ross Tucker Podcast. Cosell stated, “That is really good, and that is what you want to see from Caleb Williams.” To cap off his debut playing for the Bears, Williams finished with a 101.8 passer rating while completing 4 of 7 passes for 95 yards.

Even former Super Bowl champion Chase Daniels was full of praise for Jayden Daniels when he appeared on the Ross Tucker Podcast. Speaking about the newest Washington Commanders recruit, Daniels said, “People don’t understand how good of a pocket passer he is when he needs to be. Easily the best progression passer of the group.” Like Williams, Jayden had an explosive start playing in the NFL, where he went 2-of-3 passing for 45 yards while adding a three-yard rushing TD. Although his team lost 20-17 against the Jets, he was the only shining light.

He threw a 42-yard rocket to receiver Dyami Brown that resulted in a rushing touchdown through an 11-yard pass. However, the Patriots coach might be interested in following the C.J. Stroud method for his rookie QB, Drake Maye. Stroud, during his rookie year, played only 12 snaps over two series. But the Texans QB soon burst onto the scene by claiming the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Talking about his plan for the rookie, Mayo stated, “I expect Drake to get more reps than he did in the first game against the Eagles.” Maye played just seven snaps against the Panthers while finishing with 2-of-3 for 19 yards. After the game, Mayo said the struggles in training camp and the unexpected rainy weather in Foxborough could be the reasons behind the rookie’s lack of game time.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Patriots rookie will be given his chance while playing above seven snaps. Or, he continues to receive little game time as the race for the hottest rookie QB heats up with the regular season on the horizon.
