Remember the first week when the Cowboys decimated the Browns in Cleveland? Well, that seems like a distant memory now after the Cowboys lost two games in a row in Dallas. Although any team could hit a rough path at the start of a new season, the Cowboys’ problems go deeper before the beginning of the regular season.
After America’s team stumbled to a 28-25 loss against the Ravens in Dallas, the Cowboys GM Jerry Jones has found his head stuck in a guillotine. Appearing on the Ross Tucker Podcast, ex-Packers VP Andrew Brandt criticized Jones for his handling of contracts, especially the running backs. Pointing out his decision to not sign Ravens’ RB Derrick Henry, Brandt stated, “It’s a cop-out, and it’s only because his running backs Ezekiel Elliot and Dowdle are not doing well. They paid them cheap. He’s trying to justify that. It just makes no sense. To me, what really makes no sense is the way the Cowboys negotiated those two contracts.”

Well, Brandt might not be wrong in his explanation, as Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott haven’t had the greatest of starts to their season. While Dowdle is the leading pass rusher in Dallas, his coverage of 88 yards on 23 carries isn’t something to be proud of. Elsewhere, Elliot rejoined the Cowboys this season after spending a solitary year in New England and has only put up 40 yards with a TD back in a Week 1 win over the Browns.
Meanwhile, Henry, who was training and living in Dallas, wasn’t offered a contract by Jones. Him signing with Baltimore for a $16 million contract has been a revelation for the 30-year-old. Visiting Dallas in week 3 with his team down 0-2 at the start of their season, Henry led from the front as he finished with two touchdowns with 151 rushing yards. What makes Henry’s numbers in Dallas stand out is the fact that the Cowboys have added a mere 70 yards at the running back after three games.
But what did Jones have to say for not signing Henry before this season? Opening up on 105.3 The Fans, Jones added, “Part of what you would’ve paid him is going to players we paid in the past, and part of what you would have paid him is going forward in the future. But had I thought that position this year was gonna make that kind of difference, and that’s what you save your bucks for.”

Well, we don’t think the Cowboys GM saved any bucks for the future. As they ended up offering Dak Prescott a $240 million contract extension and WR CeeDee Lamb $136 million for four years each. However, the Cowboys owner did end up accepting responsibility after his team’s poor start to the season.

Did Jerry Jones' ego cost the Cowboys a chance at greatness by not hiring Derrick Henry?

Jerry Jones addresses fans’ frustration after loss vs. Ravens
WFAA-TV conducted a poll in Dallas to find out who to blame for the Cowboys’ poor start. And guess what the fans had to say as 78% chipped in to blame the Cowboys GM. When asked to express his thoughts about the poll results on 105.3 The Fan, Jones conveyed, “It’s well known that no decision is ultimately made here for what I either have acquiesced or approved it. That’s very fair. How could you think otherwise, whether it be who’s out there coaching, whether it be who’s out there playing, whether it be the stadium you’re walking into? Whatever it is here, that’s the way it is.”

Well, seeing how the Cowboys have struggled in multiple parts of the field, criticism towards Jones is justified. Their defense has been awful, to say the least. Having ranked 28th in total defense with 372.7 yards per game, they are last in run defense with only 185.7 yards per game. Even their offense isn’t something to boast about this season, as the Cowboys only put up 73.7 yards per game.
Cowboys star quarterback Prescott was okayish on their defeat against the Ravens as he put up 379 yards and two TDs. But their RBs Elliot and Dowdle have only managed to combine for 84 rushing yards with no TDs. If those numbers don’t improve as we head towards the fourth week of this season. The Cowboys might have to forget their dream of qualifying for the playoffs, with the Super Bowl being a distant target. As the season continues, we can only hope America’s team finds a way back into the winning column.
