Is Woody Johnson's impulsive leadership the real reason behind the Jets' decade-long struggles?

Remember January 4, 2000? That’s when Bill Belichick became ‘almost’ a Jets coach. However, before anything could happen, the now-72-year-old stunned everyone by resigning from the team’s role. Although Bill Belichick’s reason for departure is shrouded in mystery, one cannot deny the hate he had with New York Jets owner, Woody Johnson.

To share a glimpse of the former head coach’s hatred towards the Jets’ owner, ex-NFLer, Devin McCourty, joined Mike Florio on Sunday Night Football on NBC episode. While discussing the week 6 loss of the Jets against the Bills, especially after coaching and play-calling changes, McCourty recalled Bill Belichick’s comments on the team.

He revived his old days with the Patriots, and said,….that whole segment right there it flashed me back to sitting in team rooms and sitting in that first meeting on Wednesday morning when we had the Jets on the schedule. We would always get some classic line about the owner or something going on and new guys would kind of look at me and I go yeah Bill doesn’t seem like a big fan of Woody Johnson, it just always seeps through.”

In addition to that, he emphasized that his criticism reflected how he sees the team as impulsive and poorly managed, especially under Johnson. McCourty highlighted that Belichick used the phrase, “ready, fire, aim” to describe the Jets’ decision-making, and said that, “right away he just goes into attack mode.”

Now, these statements and the discussions stemmed from what Bill Belichick recently said after the Jets’ 23-20 loss to the Bills on Monday night.

Bill Belichick ripped Woody Johnson on his decision!

Just a couple of days ago, Woody Johnson and his organization decided to part ways with Robert Saleh. Now, according to Mike Florio, Saleh’s absence may have affected the Jets’ defense, especially during a play where Josh Allen ran for a gain. And if Saleh had been there, he might have been able to remind the players about the QB’s running game, possibly preventing the defensive breakdown. Similarly, former coach Bill Belichick thinks about the Jets’ team.

During a recent interview with Peyton and Eli Manning on ESPN, the former Denver quarterback said, “It seemed quite early to me to be making a coaching change.” Belichick also seized the opportunity to lash out at Johnson and his decisions. The veteran coach agreed by saying, “Yeah, well look, that’s kind of what it’s been there at the Jets. They’ve barely won over 30% in the last 10 years. The owner being the owner, just ready, fire, aim.

Hence, it was clear that Belichick wasn’t happy with Johnson’s decision to fire Saleh from the team in just 5 games of the season. However, the owner, just “wants to give the team the most opportunity to win this season,” and that’s why he chose this different direction, starting from the coach changes.
