Is Russell Wilson already a bust for the Broncos, or is it too early to judge?

What’s going on with the Pittsburgh Steelers? There was so much hype about Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, but so far, there hasn’t been a slightest spark of success. The Steelers are 2-0 in the preseason, and everyone is confused about the quarterback situation of the Steel City team. Is that because Wilson is too dated for the Pittsburgh offense?

Former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson took to The Herd with Colin Cowherd and the host eventually steered the conversation to the Pittsburgh Steelers. There’s only one burning question that comes to mind when it comes to the Steel City team, “Fields or Wilson”? DeSean Jackson was posed with the same quandary, though he had his heart set on Justin Fields.

“Honestly, I like Russell Wilson,” Jackson expressed. “I think that past few years, it’s been a struggle. He’s kind of on a decline a little bit. I mean, just with that offense, you got to go young. I mean, if I’m Mike Tomlin, I know he’s a defensive guy, but you have to go with the morale of the team and the morale of the team is young. I just think I’mma build young.”

Jackson pointed out that he’d rather take a “young” Justin Fields to start the season off because he would fit well with players like Najee Harris, George Pickens, and the other players on the Steelers offense. While his performance has been decent in the last two games, it’s also notable that he’s more athletic than his counterpart and seems to be in sync with his offense. The Steelers are probably the youngest offense in the league, so they need a player like Fields to get with the times.

The Steelers have a strong defensive lineup with players like TJ Watt, Patrick Queen, Alex Highsmith, Deshaun Elliott, and Joey Porter Jr. so defense is not a real concern for Tomlin right now. The real problem is the offense, the quarterbacks per se, who failed to put any points on the board for two straight games.

Have an interesting take?

In the last game against the Bills, Wilson was 8 of 10 and threw for only 47 yards and took 3 sacks (some of which was on the O-Line). Those sacks also resulted in a loss of 21 yards and Mike Tomlin thought the team didn’t do a “good enough job of protecting the quarterback.” Despite all this, Wilson is strangely confident about the Steeler offense that lost 9-3 to Buffalo.

“Somebody asked me if we are concerned – absolutely not,” Wilson said. “And the reason being is the level of practices that we have had. There is going to be a time during the season where it is going to be the first quarter and we didn’t score. Are we going to panic and worry? Absolutely not. We are going to win the game in the fourth quarter and that’s the way it’s going to be.”

However, Broncos went 1-2 in the 2023 preseason and only won the game where Russell Wilson didn’t play. Wilson maintained the same positivity back then as well.

Russell Wilson in Broncos 2023 preseason

Wilson played in two preseason games and lost both. However, the game against Arizona Cardinals was particularly notable. Wilson completed 7 of his 13 passes over 93 yards and threw a touchdown to Jerry Jeudy as well. However, he did take a sack from Dennis Gardeck. However, the Broncos lost with a thin margin of 18-17.

“I thought it was really good how we responded after the first drive,” Wilson noted after the game. “We really responded, getting the ball moving.” There’s nothing bad about maintaining positivity, but it gets jarring after hearing the same stance repeatedly. Back then, Sean Payton wasn’t particularly happy with the win.

The Steelers and the Detroit Lions will be going at it soon in the preseason finale. Mike Tomlin affirmed that all the starters will see action in the game against the Steelers. While preseason games “don’t matter,” Pittsburgh fans might rejoice if Russell Wilson shows sparks of his glory days again.
