It’s probably the last chance for Joe Schoen! With a season that ended 3-14, the New York Giants are pursuing a radical change. The general manager has also confirmed his current plans, which are to – keep key players, bring in fresh talent, and focus heavily on defense and special teams. At the moment, 11 players from last year are still without contracts, and just as many haven’t found a new team. But it’s not all departures – the Giants have already signed some crucial names and made big moves in free agency such as Lil’Jordan Humphrey and veteran Victor Dimukeje. However, one major spot in the squad is still hanging on a thin thread!
The Giants are still unsure who to pick Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers. Both of these quarterbacks have one Super Bowl each, and are also two of the most highlighted QBs in the free-agency market. Just as the speculations for them were on, Joe Schoen and the team made a move. According to recent reports, the Giants have agreed to sign one-time Pro Bowl quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year deal for $8 million. But that doesn’t mean the problem has been solved. With Jameis and fan-favorite Tommy DeVito, there is a suggestion for the franchise.
According to former NFLer, Keyshawn Johnson, on Speak, Joe Schoen and the Giants should sign Russell Wilson and draft Shedeur Sanders. He expressed, “In this situation, you’re basically signing bridge players as backups. So to speak right, Jameis is there. You gave Jameis basically a one-year deal (annually) and that’s a backup money and the one-year deal always says two-year $ eight million is probably one year five. The other, do whatever at the end on the other side, then you bring in Russell Wilson. You give Russell Wilson slightly a little bit more money and he gets an opportunity to not only continue to carry his brand and his wife’s brand in New York City, he now gets an opportunity to……and I’m predicting they draft Sheduer (Sanders) at the number three spot or Cam Ward is another.” This sounds a bit strange, right?

Would the QB room have too much energy with Jameis, Russ & Shedeur? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/Vlh019dMau

If we follow Johnson’s logic, the Giants would have Russell Wilson, Shedeur Sanders, and Jameis Winston. It could be a good option, because Wilson is a Super Bowl champ. His experience would definitely help others. But as Joy Taylor pointed out, that QB room would be overflowing with energy. So, why the former wide receiver stated this point? Well, he has a reason behind it, as he also suggested that Joe Schoen should part ways with Tommy DeVito.
Continuing his stance, Johnson explained, “Yes, you gotta have three quarterbacks. A lot of energy in one room. That’s what they need, though. They gotta have that energy and that leadership to teach the young man and Sheduer when he takes over how to play the quarterback position.” As for fan-favorite DeVito, he suggested to Joe Schoen and team, “You part ways with DeVito. Sorry DeVito, you gotta go. We like you, but not right now, and that’s what you do to build your roster in your quarterback room.”
So, instead of DeVito, he advised the Giants to draft another young quarterback in the later rounds next year, ensuring they have a strong long-term plan at the position. Well, getting rid of DeVito doesn’t sound like Joe Schoen’s plan for now. It’s because the GM has signed the QB to a one-year, $1 million deal. As of Russell Wilson’s case, the QB is demanding around $20 to $30 million. And it’s speculated that the franchise might not go that much further with a veteran QB, especially after signing Jameis Winston. So, does that leave room for the fresh talent – Shedeur Sanders?
Joe Schoen’s Giants can be Shedeur Sanders’s next home?
Shedeur Sanders’s NFL future is still up in the air. But his father, Deion Sanders? Oh, the Colorado coach and a supportive dad, knows exactly where he wants him to land. This happened when, during an interview at the ProMat conference, the host asked about Shedeur’s ideal destination. And Coach Prime didn’t hesitate.
On Monday, Deion Sanders said, “Let’s hope it’s New York.” Now many of you might be confused about the Jets or the Giants. But given the situation that the Jets have already signed Justin Fields in March, the team seems locked in on their quarterback plan. So, as obvious, it would be Joe Schoen’s Giants which the coach was talking about.

With the third overall pick, Joe Schoen needs a quarterback. They recently signed Jameis Winston, but that doesn’t mean they won’t draft Shedeur. Why? Obviously, the QB is a great player, who finished the 2024 season with 4,134 passing yards and 37 touchdowns. In addition, he has earned Big 12 offensive Player of the Year as well. But that’s not all! The interest is real. How?
Well, Giants GM Joe Schoen attended multiple Colorado games last season and even met with young Sanders. Moreover, in February, he praised Shedeur, calling him a “great guy” with “a really good personality.” He even added, “He’s (Sanders) a bit of a cliché, but he meets all the requirements of a [player with a] father who is a soccer coach and the passion with which he approaches the game.” So, will the two connect?

Well, mock drafts already link the Giants to Sanders, for their selection at the third overall pick. But as we know, nothing is set in stone in the league!
