Russ is back after six weeks of guesswork on when he would start in black and gold. It seems the 9-time Pro Bowler finally gets his chance to show his capabilities in Pittsburgh against the Jets this week. Although rumors kept flying around about whether he would get his starting berth back from his backup QB, Justin Fields.
Said rumors have been put to bed by ex-Seahawks WR TJ Houshmandzadeh on The Facility, “I was told that Russell Wilson is 100% the starter.” Well, this comes on the back of intense speculation when Mike Tomlin opened the door of Wilson’s comeback after he gave us an update on his calf injury. Serving his media duties on Tuesday, the Steelers head coach shared, “Over the course of the week, I got comfortable with his ability to display his health. He’s in consideration this week. We’ll see where that leads up.”

Wilson remained questionable until the first six weeks of NFL action this season. Because of the calf injury, he suffered just before the start of the regular season. However, going through his recovery this week was encouraging for Russ as he continues to rust off the injury. Being a full participant over the week, Wilson is equally excited to play his first game of the year.
You might be thinking, how come it’s his first game, having played with the Broncos last season? Well, for the final few games last year, Broncos head Sean Payton decided to bench Russ, which ended his two-year disastrous tenure in Denver. Having played his last game before New Year’s Eve, the Steelers QB said, “It’s the first game of the year for me. You know, I’ve been fortunate to be in a lot of first games. The confidence is there, obviously. Obviously, just being out with the guys that’s the fun part of this game.”
While sharing his thoughts about coming back into the lineup, Russell Wilson also spoke about the motivation that led him to join the Steelers Nation. Signing a one-year deal worth $1.21 million this offseason, former Broncos QB added, “I came here for one reason and that was to win the Super Bowl. I think we have that opportunity. But we’ve gotta do the work.” With Russ coming back, Fields finds himself on the bench. Having led the Steelers to a 4-2 start this season, he gave an honest take on his performances this season.

Russell Wilson's return: A game-changer for the Steelers or a risky move benching Fields?
Have an interesting take?
Justin Fields remains heartbroken as his season was going pretty well considering the start he gave to the Steelers. Even by his standards, the numbers he put over the course of six games weren’t really that bad. With only one interception by his name and 10 TDs (5 passing and 5 rushing), Fields handed the responsibility to the best of his capabilities.
But still, it wasn’t enough, as the offense struggled to put up points on the board. With an average of 20 points per game, the Steelers weren’t spectacular with Justin under center. Even he was fairly critical of his performances, “I don’t think I played you know, good enough, if I’m being real with you. If I’m being real with myself, I think if I did play well enough. I don’t think there would be any sort of, who should be playing, who should be not.”
Although Fields’ numbers aren’t that bad, the final decision was always up to Tomlin, who said, “Stats are often for losers. It’s comfort food when you’re taking an L.” Seeing Tomlin bring Russ back into the lineup. It could end up being a decision that can go either way.

For now, we don’t know whether it would be a positive impact or a negative one for the black and gold team. But those questions would be answered as the Steelers take on the Jets this weekend.
