I feel bad for the New York Football teams. Be it the Jets or the Giants, the troubles just don’t seem to boil down anytime soon. While people are waiting for more leaks to surface from the Jets front office, I was more interested in what’s going on with the New York Giants and their $160 million quarterback, Daniel Jones, who they just released.
I saw a recent post and it said that DJ was listed on the Cowboys website. Just like every curious football fan, my brain started making up all sorts of scenarios about Jones’ next landing spot. Furthermore, one of the teams I had in mind was the Dallas Cowboys. After all, it was not too far-fetched to assume that the Cowboys need a new quarterback because Cooper Rush just isn’t cutting it.
What’s up with Daniel Jones?

The next best thing that I thought I could do is to reach out to Andrew Brandt, the former Green Bay Packers VP to get some clarity. Brandt offered to take some questions before the Sunday Night Football affairs began, so I jumped the gun and asked him about the rumors. It looks like Daniel Jones to Cowboys won’t gain much traction after all.
They’ve got the highest paid QB in the NFL under contract four more years.
No reason to go there. https://t.co/71D362rKkw— Andrew Brandt (@AndrewBrandt) November 24, 2024
“Thoughts on Daniel Jones-Cowboys rumors? #AskAndrew,” I replied to his post. I was fortunate enough to get a direct answer. “They’ve got the highest-paid QB in the NFL under contract for four more years. No reason to go there,” Andrew wrote in a reply to my quote. I mean, it’s not hard to fathom why Jerry Jones won’t make that move.
What’s your perspective on:
Are the Cowboys secretly tanking this season, or is it just a series of unfortunate events?
Have an interesting take?
He paid $240 million to Dak this off-season. And I’m sure the billionaire owner might avoid delving into the semantics of even remotely dealing with Daniel Jones. The money bit had me thinking about the QB contract situation. The former Giant is on the waiver and if any team wants to pick him, they will have to pay the remaining $11.83 million on his contract, besides the $23 million in injury guarantees for the next season.
It was cheaper for the Giants to let go of DJ than it was to trade him. Something seemed fishy about benching the former Giants QB. The Giants clearly weren’t interested in paying him the injury guarantees, in hindsight. Reminds me of the whole Russell Wilson–Denver Broncos debacle. But Jones’s and Wilson’s situation are a thing of the past now and I was more focused on what the Giants had in store after releasing DJ.
Come the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For some reason, I wasn’t surprised. This is the organization that let go of Saquon Barkley, the only player who could complement Daniel Jones in the toughest of times. The reason for letting Barkley go was to apparently center the team around Daniel Jones. Do you see how Barkley is playing with the Eagles? It’s like he’s the lifeline of their offense. The bad decision-making somehow trickled down to Brian Daboll, who decided to put Tommy DeVito over Drew Lock. Didn’t make much sense to me.
After watching that 30-7 loss, one thing was as clear as water. Daniel Jones wasn’t the problem. DeVito became the star of the game, just not in the way he wanted to. What Baker Mayfield did mid-game was a complete mockery of Tommy Cutlets. “Tribute to Tommy,” is how Baker Mayfield summarized the game.
With this, my attention turned to Jerry Jones and for the time due, it felt like Andrew Brandt’s comment aged like wine. After losing 5 games in a row, Dallas decided to switch gears and turn the tables around. Here people thought Jerry Jones was about to tank the whole season. That’s because things weren’t going right at the Jerry Land. But I was wrong, just like many others. The 34-26 win against the Commanders was proof enough.
Is Jerry Jones’ Cowboys saved?
The last game against the Houston Texans was brutal. The Cowboys’ pieces were falling like dominos. Jake Ferguson, Zack Martin, and Tyler Smith were among a few players who went down in the duel against the Texans. And I thought to myself: will the Cowboys be competitive enough to resume the rest of their season? Yeah, I’ve heard Jerry Jones say he was “all in” a million times in a row and doing nothing about it. Honestly, that was a bit disappointing.

But there’s no use lamenting on the past. However, I couldn’t resist the urge to check X and see what the people are saying about America’s team. However, an EssentiallySports article was enough to get an idea of what the Cowboys fans and football enthusiasts think about the Dallas team in general.
“To be honest it feels like the tank is on and has been since the offseason. First, they barely do anything until late camp and then a ton of guys get hurt and are just about always kept out 2-3 extra games on top of what they were supposed to miss. I think they had this planned,” that’s the fan comment that got my attention. In hindsight, there is some truth to it.

The Cowboys missed on signing Derrick Henry, who was in Dallas in the off-season, simply because they apparently didn’t have money for it. Well, I still don’t believe the Cowboys are making it to the playoffs this year, reasonably. That’s because Cooper Rush isn’t ready to lead the team to the promised land just yet and in all honesty, neither does Daniel Jones (that’s if Jerry Jones signed him).
Joining a new team on such short notice, learning their offense in a couple of days, and winning games just isn’t possible. With that, the next thing I can possibly think of is his DJ joining forces with the Raiders. Gardner Minshew broke his collarbone in the game against the Broncos and has suffered a season-ending injury. Will the Raiders house Daniel Jones? Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. For now, Daniel Jones’ situation is up in the air.
