“We got a lot of football left… six football games, that’s a lifetime.” Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner, made a bold statement about Mike McCarthy’s tenure extension. Though the Cowboys have clinched the recent win against the Commanders, all the efforts are obviously for the climax aka the Super Bowl (seemingly farther than ever now). While the Cowboys are struggling, their head coach’s career is also not as stable as it was. So, what exactly did the Cowboys’ owner say about Mike’s tenure extension?
On the DLLS Dallas Cowboys Podcast, former WR Jesse Holley remarked, “When Jerry is looking for a head coach, does he go and just pick anyone?” and continued saying, “I don’t believe he wants someone who doesn’t have head coaching experience.” The 40-year-old ended his take on Jerry Jones, saying, “When you start looking at Mike McCarthy coming back, while I don’t think he’s going to come back.”
After calling the tenure extension a ‘crazy’ idea, Jerry took a stand on the HC’s future on 105.3 The Fan Podcast. The 82-year-old said, “That’s not crazy. And listen, Mike McCarthy is one outstanding coach… this is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, and done that. He’s got great ideas.” He continued, “So, bottom line is, in no place, in my body language or anything else, have you seen indications about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn’t. We got a lot of football left… six football games, that’s a lifetime.”

Only six games are there for the Dallas Cowboys to make or break into the postseason. Currently, the Cowboys (4-7) are on a rocky path, ranking 3rd in the NFC East, while their HC’s tenure is up in the air.

The 61-year-old HC expressed his feelings after Jerry Jones took a stand for him. He said, “I really haven’t talked about it all year. So, I’m not going to start on a short week and an important division game.” Mike, who has been the head coach for seven franchises throughout his career, continued, “But I’m not going to throw positive vibes either, so keep them coming. That’s all good. But, yeah, that’s not something I’m really focused on.”
McCarthy inked a five-year contract with the Cowboys in the 2020 season. He was the head coach for the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018 before signing for the Cowboys. During the Packer’s tenure, his team brought Green Bay the Super Bowl in 2010. His leadership skills and dynamic decision-making earned him the NFL Coach of the Year in 2011. His overall record as HC in the NFL is 167–102–2.
