Is Trevor Lawrence paid too high too soon? Well, that’s the talk of the town in the league currently. The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed their quarterback to a five-year, $275 million on Thursday. Although it’s wonderful news for Lawrence, one cannot deny it’s one of the most shocking deals of this year as well.

Additionally, this monster deal has made him one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL, and yes, it seems a bit ridiculous to many experts. However, for analysts, the surprising moment does not lie with the money primarily, the concern is he is getting more than other top quarterbacks in the league like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and others. Former running back LeSean McCoy, who played one season with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, is among those analysts who think Lawrence is getting more than expected.

The former Chiefs RB said, “We’re in a world where Trevor makes more than Patrick Mahomes yearly, that’s really going on in the world today…we really living and breathing the world where Trevor Lawrence is making more money than Josh Allen….Lamar Jackson and that’s where we are. I’m done with this though bro because I’m tired of people telling me well that’s what the market is right. And I hate this saying because I want everybody to get their money, but we got to stop the money with the quarterbacks right unless they earn it and deserve it like the guys I just talked about.”

This conversation happened on the recent episode of Speak, where Emmanuel Acho, LeSean McCoy, James Jones, and Dave Helman expressed surprise and skepticism to see Lawrence getting such a high-paying contract. They also questioned if Lawrence has proven himself worthy of this deal. McCoy pointed out that Lawrence’s performance doesn’t match other top quarterbacks in terms of winning percentage, completions, and other key stats.

In conclusion, the analysts highlighted that while Lawrence has potential. However, his achievements don’t yet justify the high salary, especially compared to other elite QBs like Burrow, Mahomes, and Allen.

Is Trevor Lawrence really getting high that doesn’t match his current worth?

Trevor Lawrence was absolutely handed a massive contract extension worth $275 million for five years. This deal pays him $142 million which is fully guaranteed, and the $55 million average annual value. It may seem surprising that Lawrence received such a lucrative deal. While he has performed well since being drafted first overall in 2021, he hasn’t yet fully met the high expectations.

His rookie season under Urban Meyer was disastrous, but he improved significantly in his second year. However, last season, he and the Jaguars’ offense seemed to plateau. Over the two seasons with competent coaching, Lawrence completed nearly 66% of his passes with 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Additionally, his passer rating of 91.9 is slightly above the league average, and his ability to avoid sacks and scramble effectively is notable. However, he has struggled with deep passes and accuracy. Despite being slightly above average in performance, according to sports writer Jared Dubin, the Jags were still right to give him this deal.

And he explains why – In the NFL, the next quarterback up for a contract, given they are at least an above-average starter, typically becomes the highest-paid player, regardless of whether they are the best quarterback in the league. So, it’s kind of an automatic case: whoever gets the new extension, typically becomes the highest-paid of that time, with rare cases existing. However, time will tell whether the money’s worth will be proven the upcoming season and if Lawrence will be able to lead his team to new heights.
