Brock Purdy became like this wonder kid last year when he took the team to the Super Bowl. This year hasn’t been that fortunate. His 12-4 win-loss record in 2023 (16 games) has reduced to 6-6 record in 2024 after week 14. Everyone is wondering what went wrong with the 49ers quarterback?

An ex-49ers coach has the answer. Mike Martz, the offensive coordinator in 2008, appeared on the 95.7 The Game show where he revealed the reason behind the poor show and said, “I don’t think the Offensive Line has been protecting (Brock Purdy) as well as they have in the past. Purdy is the same guy. He’s the real deal.” That would also alarm the HC Kyle Shanahan and the GM John Lynch.

They need to strengthen their O-line. Apart from the left tackle Trent Williams (649 snaps in 10 games), the team has mostly relied on center Jake Brendel (817 snaps in 13 games), the right guard Dominick Puni (820 snaps in 13 games), and the right tackle Coltin McKivitz (818 snaps in 13 games). But there are other areas too that needs attention.

There have been some rumors that Brock Purdy doesn’t have much freedom at the 49ers. Shanahan controls him and dictates play calling. Sports Illustrated writer Grant Cohen claimed in November that the QB cannot change his routes pre-snap, questioning Shanahan’s capabilities. It gave the message that the 49ers QB, known to use his brain more than his power, was being limited.

However, the quarterback hasn’t indicated it yet. He has been the leader of the locker room and locked in on the looming situation. On Wednesday, before the TNF game against the Rams, the QB said, “It’s just being in the moment, man, and not looking too far ahead. So with that comes, you know, playing together as a team and playing desperate because we don’t have room to lose.

Apart from the on-ground performance, the GM and the HC have to find the perfect contract amount for the signal caller. There are wild theories among the fans.

How much could be Brock Purdy’s contract extension with the 49ers?

The Niners struck a jackpot with him in 2022 when they signed a 4-year $3.7 million deal. In 2025, he is set to earn only $1.1 million. But that might not be possible in the offseason of 2026 if they don’t offer him a deal in 2025.

According to Spotrac, Brock Purdy’s current value is $59.7 million per year, just below Dak Prescott with $60 million per year, the highest contract. But would they really offer him that much? Going by the recent 49ers spending, they can. In November, they signed a 5-year, $92 million deal with their cornerback Deommodore Lenoir.

Before that, they signed a 3-year $82 million contract extension with the LT Trent Williams, with $48 million guaranteed. While talking to reporters on December 11, Shanahan was asked about the pending contract extensions. He made a swift cut that the GM John Lynch would take care of these things, and he doesn’t get involved until the offseason.

Some fans argue that the team could take a fresh route and try to draft a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, training a signal caller takes time. And the results take even longer time.
