To be honest, there hasn’t been a tougher puzzle than the Giants’ QB room. What started off with only Tommy DeVito has now welcomed two seasoned veterans, Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. Still, it’s difficult to predict what the Giants’ QB approach will be a week away from the NFL draft. Yes, their general manager, Joe Schoen, has stated, “I don’t think that’s mandatory,” when asked whether the Giants are still looking to draft a young signal-caller. But their offseason activity before the draft paints a completely different picture.
The moment the Giants brought in Wilson and Winston, it was massively predicted that they wouldn’t draft a QB. At No.3, the Giants have been heavily touted to draft Penn State’s Abdul Carter instead. His addition to the Giants’ D-line, already consisting of Kayvon Thibodeaux, could make them a formidable opposition. However, as each day passes by, Carter’s arrival in New York is getting scrutinized. Why? Because the Big Blues are hosting QBs for private workouts.
Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Louisville’s Tyler Shough, and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe are all scheduled to have private workouts in the Giants’ facility. This led to some raised eyebrows, seeing the Giants host QBs just days away from the draft. Considering everything that’s going on, NFL insider Dianna Russini tried to offer her thoughts behind the Giants’ late surge of QB auditions. “I can tell you from what I can gather after having some conversations. This is less about coming to a final decision for the Giants, but more about collecting as much information as possible,” Russini said on her Scoop City podcast.

The situation remains fluid with what the Giants will do at the top of the draft.
But that doesn’t mean their building is split, despite these late QB workouts.

Well, something similar to Russini’s feelings has also been reciprocated by the Giants GM. “It’s a unique calendar year. I think the draft is as early as it can be..But these private workouts have been in place,” Schoen claimed. Astonishingly, Schoen has never drafted a QB in his Giants tenure since taking over in 2022. He may have given Daniel Jones a big-money extension, but that’s it. You know how that decision of his turned out. So, the QB choice needs to be bang on if Schoen wants to survive in New York.

Meanwhile, there’s the presumed starter of the G-Men, Russell Wilson. He still remains in the dark about whether it will be a smooth-sailing QB tenure in New York or a precarious one.
Russell Wilson’s Giants future looks gloomy before it even begins
Wilson’s arrival in New York was seen as a win-now approach for Joe Schoen, who aims to save his job. Having finished his 13th season with the Steelers in an ugly fashion, losing 5 straight games. Wilson’s advent at MetLife Stadium, where he won his only Super Bowl, was supposed to be more than just a starting job. A redemption season for the 10-time Pro Bowl after getting dumped out of Pittsburgh in a one-and-done chapter. However, New York may not be too kind to Russ either. The way the Giants are approaching their draft, with lots of QB private workouts, Wilson’s tenure in the Big Apple could just be another Kurt Warner-like situation.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Russell Wilson just a stopgap for the Giants, or can he lead them to glory?
Have an interesting take?
Warner, a leader of the Greatest Show on Turf offense, who delivered the Rams their first Super Bowl title, was a stopgap QB for the Big Blues like Russ is now. Warner was just warming up the Giants’ QB position before the New Yorkers went on to unleash Eli Manning. However, he did guide Manning before he proved to be immensely successful, leading the Giants to two Super Bowl titles in the era of Tom Brady’s Patriots’ dominance.
Maybe something similar could happen in New York. Whoever the Giants pick, he can come in and learn from Wilson. Once his development is complete, maybe he could be the next Eli Manning for the G-Men. Just this time it won’t be Warner, instead it will be Wilson’s teachings that could usher in a new era of Giants QB.
