No one saw this coming. In his 5 years of playing pro football, Mahomes had never had the kind of outburst that spectators saw after the game against the Buffalo Bills. The Kansas City Chiefs were trailing behind the Bills but had the ball in their possession. 2x Super Bowl Champion, Patrick Mahomes, passed the ball to Travis Kelce, who lateral passed it to wideout Kadarius Toney. He rushed towards the end zone and… touchdown Chiefs!
But the Chiefs’ celebration turned into anger when the referees overturned the touchdown and made an offside call. After the game ended and the Chiefs lost 17-20, Mahomes was livid with rage and screamed at the refs and had to be restrained by his teammates. Later, both he and head coach Andy Reid made public comments about the referees’ decisions. And the NFL did not take kindly to it.

During a media interaction, Mahomes apologized for his outburst. When asked about his fine, he said, “Everybody saw it on a big game. And so there’s going to be consequences to that.” While Mahomes was fined $50,000, coach Reid was fined a hefty $100,000. the exact charges, as reported by NFL.com include “publicly criticizing the officials” and “unsportsmanlike conduct for abusive, threatening or insulting language to officials”.
Although the fines are not enough to make a sizeable dent in the massive salary that the duo earns from the NFL, Mahomes was sad that he had broken his personal record of zero fines. But every player has the option of appealing his fine in the hope of reducing it or even doing away with it. When asked about the possibility of an appeal, Mahomes said that he didn’t even know how that process worked and that he’ll just “move on and play”.
For now, he and his squad are focussing on the upcoming game against divisional rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders.
