NFL roster cuts are always brutal, but for Jacksonville, parting ways with a two-time Pro Bowler was bound to raise eyebrows. After three seasons with the team, the tight end wasn’t just another name on the release list—he was a key piece of their offense. But with free agency looming and the Jaguars scrambling to clear cap space, the front office made its call. And the exiting player? He had a message for them on his way out.
First, let’s talk about the 2024 season. Just 4 wins—it’s definitely an embarrassing way to exit a season. The Jags really had a tough time finding solutions to stay in the games, forget about winning. But for the Jags, this poor record was nothing new. The fact they haven’t won more than 9 regular games in the regular season since 2018 is probably more disappointing. But now, after yet another season with nothing to show, Shad Khan has made a bold appointment. And new HC Liam Coen is wasting no time taking some strong decisions on their roster.
The Jaguars released four of their players on Thursday prior to the NFL’s free agency period opening next week. One of them is TE Evan Engram, who shared a message for his franchise, especially the HC Liam Coen after the exit news. Engram had been with the Jaguars for three years. And we all know that three years is a long time in the NFL. Enough to become familiar with the system. Enough to feel at home.

But the 30-year-old has been shown the door now, and he had a bit of emotion to express. What did he say? Taking to his official X account, Engram wrote, “It’s all love Jax. But they just let a mf dog loose! Excited for what’s next! #BeEazy.” With this statement, he is expressing that the Jaguars have freed a highly skilled and motivated player. He is now ready to prove his worth elsewhere.

This two-time Pro Bowl tight end’s release indeed came as a surprise for all. So, why the decision by Liam Coen and GM James Gladstone? Well, according to the reports, one major reason could be Engram’s torn labrum in this past campaign. This injury forced him to quit the season after playing in just 9 games, where he recorded 47 catches for 365 yards and one touchdown.
In addition, saving cap space is another reason being attached to his exit. After all, Engram’s departure clears $6.04 million for Liam Coen’s team. But, as mentioned, he wasn’t alone on the list of players released by Jacksonville on Thursday, March 5.
What’s your perspective on:
Did the Jaguars make a mistake letting Evan Engram go, or is it a smart move?

Liam Coen and James Gladstone had a busy day!
Fans are shocked to hear the Jaguars released two-time Pro Bowl Evan Engram. But they better keep those jaws wide open, as the surprises didn’t end there. Along with Engram, players like wide receivers Devin Duvernay & Josh Reynolds and cornerback Ronald Darby were also released by Liam Coen. Why?

Well, look at the calendar. It’s pretty much the same story at this time of year, year after year. As per reports, these moves are an effort to create additional salary cap space for the team to utilize in the 2025 offseason. With Duvernay’s exit, the team will save $2.73 million in salary cap. Reynolds’s departure will help the Jags to save $4.26 million, while Darby’s exit saves them $2.38 million.
Along with these roster moves, the Jags are trading wide receiver Christian Kirk to Houston in return for a seventh-round selection. His exit brings a huge $10.4 million in cap savings. Looks like Liam Coen is set on molding the team in his vision and freeing up some funds to do it effectively. Can they finally register double-digit wins in the regular season? Or will Duval end up becoming a sleepy hollow around January yet again?
