Last week with under a minute left, Baker Mayfield had the ball at the 49ers’s 8-yard line, trailing 20-17. The crowd held its breath. Tampa didn’t find the end zone but nailed a tying field goal with 44 seconds left. But what stood out from that drive was Mayfield holding off 49ers’ Nick Bosa with a stiff arm, escaping a sack, and completing a clutch throw to Rachaad White. The viral play drew the attention of Tom Brady and it also became a talking point during a discussion between Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson.
On a crucial fourth-and-7, with Bosa closing in, Mayfield not only stiff-armed the pass-rusher but held him off for quite some time before making the decisive pass. The Bucs still lost out 20-23, suffering their fourth defeat in the process, in what has been an inconsistent campaign. With injuries to stars Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, Mayfield has managed to keep them in contention and last Sunday, he once again displayed his importance to the side.
Nearly a week after Mayfeld’s incredible play, Fox sideline reporter Erin Andrews and studio host Charissa Thompson dissected the highlight reel and were all praises for the Bucs QB. Speaking on the Calm Down podcast, Andrews brought up, “How about Baker stiff-arming Nick Bosa?” Thompson took no time to excitedly answer, “Holy s**t.”

Andrews covered the Week 10 game live in Tampa and couldn’t get enough of Mayfield. She mentioned, “I am all day Baker Mayfield. Damn, he is just so fun to cover, he is just so fun to root for.” Thompson then described the play in detail while adding that holding off someone the size of Bosa is no mean feat. This led Andrews to add, “He (Nick Bosa) is like Sasquatch compared to Baker Mayfield. He’s massive of a man.”
Mayfield’s journey from being a No. 1 pick and then almost getting out of the league due to poor performances and firmly establishing himself as the Bucs’ number-one QB has been inspirational. While the Bucs have had a mixed bag this season, Mayfield continues to keep them afloat with a 4-6 record.
“Kind of a journeyman, then ends up in Tampa. You and I, obviously, we love him. But having sat down with him this year and just finding the home in Tampa, he then—Mike Evans goes down, Chris Godwin goes down, his No. 1 and No. 2. And that dude has zero quit,” Thompson added before adding, “I would want to play with and for a guy like that.”
Mayfield’s sensational effort also garnered high praise from Tom Brady, who said, “I mean, one arm … That’s one of the best plays I’ve ever seen a quarterback make,” on the FOX broadcast.
So far, Mayfield has come up with 24 touchdowns and 2,505 yards with a 70.6 completion percentage. He’s also added two touchdowns and 192 yards on the ground. Against the 49ers, he completed 18 of 29 passes for 116 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions and added three rushing yards on three carries, but as we know his stiff-arming exploits were the highlight and even Nick Bosa had to address it afterward.

Baker Mayfield’s athleticism was on full display on Sunday, November 10. His stiff-arming the defender went viral and as obvious, it came to the notice of Nick Bosa himself once again. So, when the reporters asked him about that play during a post-game presser, the 49ers’s star player said with a laugh, “Man, the slow motion on that makes it look pretty tough.”
Jokes apart! He further added praising Baker Mayfield’s ability: “It was weird because it was fourth down, so I was thinking more if I hold on to him I don’t think he can make a play. If I try and get him down, maybe go for his legs, then he could possibly get off and throw it, so I figured he couldn’t make a play, but he definitely did.”

Nick Bosa experienced Baker Mayfield’s strong arms, but Josh Allen had earlier recognized it once, when he said, “You know who’s got a sneaky big arm is [Mayfield]. Baker Mayfield’s got a cannon, and I don’t think he gets enough credit for it.” Indeed, now the world saw it!
