“Why coach walk away like that?” Patrick Mahomes couldn’t stop laughing after Andy Reid turned his back on his quirky antics during a July practice. It’s just another glimpse into their hilarious dynamic—Mahomes’ playfulness matched by Reid’s joke-friendly vibe. And who could forget Reid’s Santa Claus look after the Chiefs’ Week 17 win? But don’t be fooled by the laughs and beard—Reid knows when to lay down the law. Just ask a former Chiefs coach who’s seen his no-nonsense side firsthand. Talk about having layers!
Former NFL & UCLA offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy recently joined in an interview with NFL insider Tom Pelissero. During the discussion, Pelissero asked Bieniemy’s favorite play of Patrick Mahomes. Talking about the same, the former Chiefs coordinator revealed an incident that clearly suggests that he once faced Andy Reid’s wrath over Mahomes’s play in the 2018 season.
Hence, while recalling it, Bieniemy said, “I told this one not too long ago on TV, and it still amazes me. It just blows my mind because right in the middle of a play, Patrick is scrambling to his left. We’re playing against the Denver Broncos. It’s a critical third-down situation, and we got Von Miller. You know he was pretty fresh at that time. I think this is the 2018 season. And Pat is scrambling to his left.” Miller had beaten Mitch Schwartz and was just about to sack Mahomes. But then, Mahomes did something only he could.

With his left hand, he flipped the ball to a receiver, completing the play for a first down. It was one of those moments that left everyone stunned. Even Eric Bieniemy, who was with the Chiefs from 2018 to 2022, got excited. He admitted that he “got caught up in the moment just because it happened. But on top of that, I was trying to make sure that I could get the next play call because I was like, “Hey, did you guys see this?” And I’m sitting there like, Coach Reid’s like, “Hey, you got to get the damn play in and call the play.” So I call the play and go back.” With this, Bieniemy revealed Andy Reid’s wrath over Mahomes’s play.
However, later, he also mentioned that all these things make Patrick Mahomes stand out as a player who doesn’t just want to win but takes every moment personally. But without any doubt, it’s true that despite Andy Reid’s funny moments with his team, there are some stories that suggest the head coach has another serious personality.
Does Andy Reid even punish Patrick Mahomes?
Patrick Mahomes burst onto the NFL scene with a flair for deep-ball magic, thrilling fans and rewriting expectations. His rookie season was electric, with 75 deep completions that left defenses scrambling. But over the years, something changed!
Patrick Mahomes’s average throw distance started shrinking, and those signature deep bombs became less frequent. For instance, by last season, his passes were nearly three yards shorter than when he first set the league on fire. Now, as obvious, this was visible to Coach Andy Reid. And guess what? He wasn’t about to let that slide.

Hence, in his own playful way, Andy Reid began nudging Mahomes to bring back the deep game. For example, during practices, he’d throw light jabs, teasing Mahomes with lines like, “Oh, you want to throw the checkdown here?” Eventually, these jabs became a fun challenge for Mahomes, who once embraced that in such comments from the HC, he usually reply, “I got you, Coach.”
Now, with the 2024 season ending soon and a chance at a historic three-peat, Andy Reid’s playful push and Patrick Mahomes and the team’s collective efforts will only come in handy!
