Donovan Mitchell says Dak Prescott equals Mahomes—Is he onto something or just plain wrong?

Philly fans hate the Dallas Cowboys with every fiber of their being. “Dallas Sucks” are probably some of the nicest words that might come out of an Eagles fan’s mouth. Imagine trying to compare their quarterbacks in this era. The conversation will get heated for sure. We’ll not go back to the Troy Aikman era, but stick to the present with Dak Prescott and Jalen Hurts.

Decades flew by since the rivalry first started and it didn’t take long for Gillie, Wallo, and the Cavaliers SG Donovan Mitchell to revisit the rivalry on Million Dollaz Worth Of Game. Mitchell was reminded of a time when Cam Newton compared Dak Prescott with Patrick Mahomes the Cavs SG based his argument on that. Except this time, he took Dak over Jalen Hurts.

Is Dak Prescott really better than Jalen Hurts?

“There is a stat out there, look it up. Cam Newton talked about it,” said Mitchell. “In big games, there’s two players that got something like three or four losses, something like that and it’s Dak and Patrick Mahomes.” Donovan’s approach to the subject matter didn’t impress Gillie Da Kid at all. In fact, he pointed out how Prescott has been in the league longer than Hurts and doesn’t have much to show for it.

As far as objectivity and stats are concerned, Dak Prescott is ahead of Jalen Hurts by a mile. He has multiple 4k yards seasons while Jalen Hurts has had none. The problem with Prescott is his playoff performance. At least Hurts has been to a Super Bowl and lost by a close margin. But the regular season consistency that Dak possesses is a far cry from what Jalen Hurts put up last year.

However, stats will paint a skewed picture because Dak Prescott has been in the league longer. However, Prescott is a 3x Pro Bowler while Hurts is a 2x Pro Bowler. Both went All-Pro once in their career. For reference, let’s talk about their last 50 games.

Clearly, Dak Prescott has the upper hand when it comes to the regular season games. Hurts is 2-2 in the playoff games excluding the Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl loss. However, Prescott is 2-5 in playoffs in his 8-season career with no Super Bowl contention. It’s a mixed bag of reactions that doesn’t clearly tell the story.

Have an interesting take?

However, here’s what the Cavs’ shooting guard was talking about when he said Mahomes and Dak Prescott are kind of similar.

Is Dak Prescott Patrick Mahomes without playoff wins?

Prescott and Mahomes would be the correct comparison to make because both have been around the league for the same time. It’s not about the stats, but rather the sample size that’s available over the last 7 seasons of their performance. About last month, Cam Newton took to the 4 and 1 podcast and didn’t hesitate to speak his mind.

“If you’ve got the same stat line as Patrick Mahomes, something is clicking in big games,” said Newton about Dak Prescott. However, the thing is, “something is not clicking” in the big games for Dak Prescott. Mahomes is 15-3 in the playoffs while Prescott, again, is 2-5 in his 8 seasons long career. But here’s the comparison of their last 50 games in the league.

Mahomes can still be deemed better because, for the most part, he has been playing without a suitable receiver core and is still balling out. However, Prescott has had CeeDee Lamb since 2020 and it was also the year when he broke his ankle. Again, stats don’t tell the complete picture.

Again, playoff wins are all that matters. Lamar Jackson, who was placed on the second spot on the top 100 list, has a 2-4 playoff record in his 6-season career. The point is that stats and ratings skew things up and we deter from the complete picture.

“There’s only one guy that has a Super Bowl, and there’s a lot of guys on here that doesn’t have a lot of playoff success,” Newton explained. “So if you’re going to sit here and judge Dak Prescott on playoff success, and I’m looking at a list of guys that don’t even have no playoff experience, or not even a playoff win, come on.”

People might think that it’s blasphemous to compare Prescott and Mahomes, but the regular season tells a different story altogether. Is this comparison fair? What do you think?
