The Philadelphia Eagles managed to scrape their way to a 15-12 win against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday. That doesn’t mean fans are happy, though. The Eagles somehow managed to go the whole first three quarters without scoring a single point. Of course, the Eagles’ defense has to be commended for keeping the Saints down to just 3 points that whole period too.

The Saints defense was also on point throughout, young defensive tackle Bryan Bresee in particular. With his two sacks, he was crucial in killing the Eagles’ momentum and keeping the Saints in the game. Sirianni’s baffling play calls (yes, multiple) also contributed to the Eagles remaining pointless until the 4th quarter.

What’s Nick Sirianni done this time?

At two separate points in the game, the Eagles had had the chance to tie scores with the Saints. The repeated tactical blunders had fans calling him the “Worst in-game head coach in the league,” but at least he’s decided to step up and take responsibility. He placed all the blame on his own head during the post game press conference. The first thing Sirianni did was emphasize their results, regardless of performance. “We can’t control what anyone thinks of us, we can’t control what anyone says about us. All we can control is our daily work, and we did that,” the coach said. When it came to the specific 4th down plays, he said “I called the play. Kellen [Moore] did not. That’s what I thought was best for the football team… That was my decision, it didn’t work. I’ll get better from it.”

So will he get better? Only one way to find out. Towards the end of the 2nd quarter, the Eagles were on 4th and 1 at the Saints’ 15-yard line. A field goal then would have leveled the scores, but Nick Sirianni called for a touchdown attempt. The sneaky handoff to Saquon Barkley didn’t come good, as the Saints absolutely piled on the running back. Then the second opportunity came halfway through the 3rd quarter, when on 4th and 3 from the 34-yard line, Sirianni once again decided to push forward rather than calling up their kicker, Jake Elliott.

Do the Eagles back their HC?

Despite the severe fan backlash to his decisions, players and former players have stuck their necks out for Sirianni. Former Eagles center Jason Kelce stood up for the head coach, calling him a great communicator. Other players like C.J. Gardner-Johnson have been all bluster and bravado in the aftermath of the game. The safety mocked the Saints, saying they were “Not contenders, but pretenders” for the championship. A cocky statement about a team that was on the verge of a 3 game win streak. But also in line with Sirianni’s approach to the game.

The head coach reportedly played Connor McGregor hype videos for his team before the Saints game, to instill the “Attack, attack, attack” mindset in them. It takes all sorts, I guess. For better or worse, the Eagles are Sirianni’s boys for now, here’s hoping they have a good season.
