Can Jake Elliott bounce back and prove he's still the Eagles' clutch kicker when it matters most?

Jake Elliott made headlines when he missed those crucial field goals and an extra point. Despite being one of the best kickers in the NFL right now, the Eagles’ jersey No. 4 faced backlash to some extent. But the 29-year-old kicker was the most critical of himself after the fumbles in the first half versus Commanders on November 15.

When asked about his missed goals, he responded, “I gotta watch the film. And take a look in the mirror and figure out…figure out fast.” Elliott further expressed, “I still really feel confident in myself. Feel like I’m hitting the ball well this year. So I don’t wanna overemphasize on one game. Just wanna go back to through the process and figure out.” He reiterated about ‘going through the process’ again when reports asked him about does he go through the fundamentals when he is on the sideline.

Elliott missed a 44-yard FG in Q1 and another 51-yard in the second quarter. Usually Jake doesn’t do this. In fact, in his eight seasons of NFL career, for the first time, he missed three kicks, two field goals, and an extra point in one game. His first two misses resulted in the Commanders taking a 7-3 lead at half-time. He also missed an extra point in the 4th quarter.

In field goals stats, the placekicker has matched FG% to his 2020 season – 73.7 percent. For the 2023-24 season, the same was 93.7%. Currently, he stands 39th in the FG%. Before missing an extra point in the 4th quarter.

But Saquon Barkley became the game-changer during the second half along with the offense. Barkley’s essential 39 and 23-yard run resulted in touchdowns. Also, Blankenship’s interception cut the last hopes of the Commanders’ comeback. Though the QB did throw for a TD, Jalen Hurts completed 18 of 28 passes.

While Elliott fumbled twice in the last game, his team still stands beside him. And with a win, it’s safe to say that the player avoided any major backlash.

Nick Sirianni, the franchise head coach, has confessed that the ‘track record’ of the pro place kicker makes him believe and have faith in crucial times on a 29-year-old placekicker. The HC further admitted, “We have so much faith in him and that’s what you do.” In another conversation, Sirianni confessed, “You can build connections through tough times”. They strongly believe in him and his kicking abilities.

The jersey No. 4 expressed after all the fuss, “The fact that we were able to pull this out after everything I put them through was pretty special. No one bats an eye. Everyone has a lot of confidence in me, which I appreciate.”

The Eagles preserved their lead in the NFC East division. After the upcoming seven games, the big picture will clear. Despite having one of the best QBs in the league Jalen Hurts, along with players like Saquon Barkley, and AJ Brown, if each player on the roster shows their cleanest game for the franchise, the Eagles can probably repeat the victory of 2018.
