Jalen Hurts' cheeky jab at SVP—Is he the NFL's new king of banter?

Imagine getting roasted by a guy who keeps a bottle of Louisiana hot sauce within arm’s reach! That’s Jalen Hurts for you. And just like his hot sauce, Hurts has been bringing the heat on the gridiron under center for the Eagles this season. Keeping them soaring high with an 8-2 record. Now, that win against the Commanders? Oh, it wasn’t just a W; it was a statement. And Hurts did not let the postgame dub moment go dull as he remembered to poke fun at a Washington journalist. And Hurts made sure the postgame vibes stayed spicy, tossing a playful jab at Washington’s own Scott Van Pelt.

“Hey Scott, how are you feeling?” Hurts asked, casually flipping the script during his SportsCenter interview. And then, with classic QB precision, he doubled down: “Hey Scott, how are you feeling… You’re a DMV guy.” Unexpected? Definitely. But Hurts let out a cheeky smile as he said that. Staring down into the eyes of SVP through his sunglasses (yeah, you could picture how he was eyeing Van Pelt after that humorous remark).

And to be fair, he earned the bragging right after a gritty 26-18 win. In the game where Hurts took some serious hits, even needing a concussion check at halftime. You might think that might slow his wits. But that’s where you’d be wrong. He didn’t let the bumps slow his humor.

But say whatever, it was a well-versed jab from Hurts. See, the thing is, Van Pelt is a Maryland native and die-hard DMV defender—District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. And even he couldn’t help but chuckle at the callout. Known for repping the Washington area on and off camera, he’s tweeted about his love for the DMV plenty of times. “I don’t know if it was just a DMV thing in the 80s…” he joked in March.

So, Hurts clearly picked up on the pride and decided to fire a cheeky shot across the Beltway. But what about his game? Not exactly screaming “MVP” but he was good.

Have an interesting take?

It was one of those games where the box score only tells half the story. You can probably tell as Jalen Hurts didn’t light it up statistically—18 of 28 for 221 yards, no passing touchdowns, and a rushing score. But his impact? Oh, boy, the Eagles Nation felt it…

Hurts added 39 rushing yards on 10 carries, including a clutch fourth-quarter “tush push” touchdown, proving once again why he’s carrying the load of that Philly O from under center. Of course, Hurts gave fans a scare, too. Late in the first half, he dived and landed helmet-first, grass flying out like confetti at a Super Bowl party. Next thing you know, he’s jogging into the locker room for a concussion check.

Fans held their breath, as did the Eagles on the gridiron. It was a collective gasp. But the QB returned in the second half like nothing happened. “When you see grass coming out of his helmet, yeah man, he got rocked a few times,” right tackle Lane Johnson said. Yet Hurts didn’t miss a beat, orchestrating two crucial scoring drives to seal the deal.

Sure, the offensive was running, but the defense held their own against the Washington QB Jayden Daniels to just 18 rushing yards. And if you know who we are talking about, then you know that’s no small feat considering Daniels came into the game as one of the league’s top dual-threat quarterbacks.

Coach Nick Sirianni summed it up best: “This is going to be a grimy, gritty game. Just keep going.” And that’s exactly what the Eagles did—grinding out another win, staying on top, and showing why they’re still soaring in the NFC.
