“I’m waiting for the GOAT,” Drake Maye muttered, his eyes fixed on Aaron Rodgers. Talk about a plot twist in the Patriots‘ quarterback saga.

Thursday night’s AFC East clash wasn’t just another game. It was the stage for Drake Maye’s NFL debut, and boy, did it come with a side of drama. With 4:24 left on the clock and the Jets leading 24-3, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo tossed his rookie QB into the deep end.

Maye’s first NFL pass? A near-pick targeting Austin Hooper. Welcome to the big leagues, Maye. But he bounced back, connecting with Kayshon Boutte for his first pro completion. By the final whistle, Maye had put up a modest 4-of-8 for 22 yards. Not exactly record-breaking, but hey, you gotta start somewhere.

“He moved the ball, we’ll watch the film and evaluate,” Mayo said of Maye’s performance. Translation: “We might have something here, folks.”

Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers was reminding everyone why he’s still A-Rod. The Jets‘ new signal-caller carved up the Pats’ defense, going 27-of-35 for 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns. And get this – he was running around like a guy half his age. So much for that Achilles slowing him down. You can’t blame Maye for fanboying the rival QB!

The GOAT chase of Drake Maye

After the game, while most rookies would be hunting for Brady’s autograph, Maye was fanboying over Rodgers. It’s like watching your kid pick Pepsi over Coke in a Patriots household. Scandalous!

But let’s not forget why Maye got his shot in the first place. Jacoby Brissett and the Pats’ offense? They were about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. The Pats mustered a whopping 139 total yards. That’s not a typo. One hundred and thirty-nine. In an entire game.

The Jets’ D-line treated the Patriots’ O-line like turnstiles, racking up seven sacks. Brissett ate turf five times before Mayo decided enough was enough. Even Maye got a taste, going down twice in his brief appearance.

“I just thought it was an opportunity, a good opportunity for him to go out there with the ones and put a few drives together,” Mayo explained, probably while crossing his fingers behind his back.

So, what’s next for the Pats? They’ve got a mini-bye before facing the 49ers in Week 4. Another potential carnival of sacks, if they don’t patch up that O-line.

As for Maye, he’s shown he can take a hit and keep ticking. He even scrambled for 12 yards, proving he’s got some wheels. But is it enough to unseat Brissett? That’s the million-dollar question in New England right now.

One thing’s for sure – the winds of change are blowing in Foxborough. And at the center of this Patriots’ perfect storm? A rookie QB who’s not afraid to ruffle a few GOAT feathers.
