Drake Maye has shown wonderful progress since arriving at the Patriots, especially in footwork and throwing. Even Head Coach Jerod Mayo was amazed at his performance in the 3rd preseason game against Commanders, admitting that Maye ‘outplayed’ (Jacoby) Brissett. Magnificent! Not much, as in the end, the coach chose experience. HC Jerod Mayo recently announced the veteran (Brissett) as the starting quarterback. Despite not being chosen, Maye is committed to improving.

After Mayo’s announcement, the rookie QB said, “I wouldn’t say disappointed. Obviously, I want to play. But, at the same time, I understand the situation. I came into this camp working and studying to be the starter, and that’s not going to change.” Phenomenal approach! Rookie’s willingness to improve was on full display during the training camps.

Pats offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt used Maye as the team’s 2nd signal-caller during the preseason. Last week, while talking to reporters after the practice session, he chose Brissett as their starting QB, but he had high praise for the rookie as well. Pelt said, “Drake is still learning, but he has been really impressive the last few weeks. He’s moving in the right direction, for sure.” Many NFL coaches liked how his (Maye) feet moved during the preseason game against the Eagles. And there is still a chance for the rookie.

In 3 of the last 4 seasons, barring 2021, the Pats didn’t qualify for playoffs. It is heartbreaking for the team that once ruled the NFL. Hence, they are desperately looking for redemption. And they have huge expectations from Brissett. In this scenario, the first few games are very crucial. If they lose, the coach will not hesitate to move to the alternate QB. That would be Drake Maye!

Despite all the hype around the rookie, coach Mayo’s decision to go with the veteran is a very strategic and rational one.

Drake Maye’s our second-best quarterback: Jerod Mayo

Like Drake Maye, Jacoby Brissett himself arrived in the NFL (in 2016) as a rookie in the Pats team when Brady led them. Strange coincidence! He was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in the following season. 7 years later, he is back in his first team. But it’s a different time! Jerod Mayo is the head coach. And this is his first year. He understands the locker room needs someone who is well-versed with the system. Someone who has experienced the league. Brissett perfectly fits that criteria.

The decision isn’t sudden. HC has been giving subtle hints during the entire preseason. After the game against Commanders, he mentioned, “100 percent he’s our second-best quarterback on the roster right now.” Some fans said that Mayo’s words don’t make sense. It’s quite the opposite. After having two consecutive failed seasons, the Pats can’t risk having another one. Brissett is the only experienced quarterback on their roster. But Maye has put in his quota of work.

His optimism after being neglected shows his commitment to the team. And Brissett’s announcement as starting QB doesn’t mean the position is permanently his. The result matters. Pats HC and OC want to go through the complete process of introducing the rookie to the tough competition in the world’s biggest football league. It would be interesting to watch!
