Donald Trump may be an NFL fan, but it seems his college football facts need a revisit. Here’s the thing: The 47th US president Donald Trump will remember the night of February 5, 2025, for a historic gaffe. On Wednesday, he signed an executive order that would reportedly protect female athletes from competing and sharing private spaces with trans athletes. But how did Patrick Mahomes become a part of this discussion?
Well, we know the Super Bowl is coming up and all eyes are on Mahomes and his team. And while Trump’s excitement is understandable, he thought, he had Pat’s college coach, Tommy Tuberville, on his side. You see, Tuberville, who introduced a Senate bill titled ‘Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports’ was praised by Trump.
The sitting president stated, “You know, his quarterback was named Mahomes. He was a great college coach. I said, ‘how good was he?’ He said, ‘You don’t wanna know how good. He made me into a great coach’. Pretty good quarterback, right? Ya, he was very good. He is a good guy too.”

The issue here? Tuberville was at Texas Tech from 2010 to 2012, while Patrick Mahomes arrived there in 2014 and played under Kliff Kingsbury, successor to Tommy Tuberville. But there is something interesting we need to consider.
Previously, Tuberville claimed that he played a role in recruiting Mahomes to the Texas Tech program. But ‘Cover 3 College Football Podcast’ did a fact-check on this and debunked this claim, citing that Texas Tech’s recruitment focus was instead on a different QB—D.J. Gillen. Gillen’s exit led them to recruit Mahomes, which was a month after Tuberville left for Cincinnati.
Well, only Trump and Tuberville can reveal the depth of their discussion. Regardless, the latter retired from coaching in 2016, and two years later, he entered politics and was elected as Alabama’s Republican senator in 2020.

None of this will stop Trump from attending the upcoming Super Bowl, though. He announced a few days back that he would be in attendance to watch the historic Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on February 9. The first sitting US president to do so! But it doesn’t stop here.
The President even hinted at who he was supporting as he said, “I don’t want to say, but there’s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner.” Claiming he didn’t see the video, Patrick Mahomes accepted the President’s praise for his game. “It’ll be cool to be able to play in front of the sitting president. Someone who’s at the top position in our country. I didn’t see that clip, but obviously it’s cool to hear that he has seen me play football and respects the game that I play.”
However, his friend and teammate, Travis Kelce, was so excited. He went into rhetoric after getting the news and said, “That’s awesome. It’s a great honor. No matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life. Having the president there, it’s the best country in the world and that’s pretty cool.”
He is right. A chance of a three-peat rarely comes in any NFL player’s life. And here they are. With one win, they will occupy a permanent place in NFL history. While the situation is getting intense, Trump has just added flair to it. With his college football error, he made sure all people could talk about was him.
Fans roast Donald Trump over Patrick Mahomes mistake…
Football fans were really quick to point out Donald Trump’s mistake and, let us just say, they were in no mood to let it go. A couple of fans wrote:
- “Yep, and Vince Lombardi did a whale of a job with Michael Jordan. 🙄“
- “He just flat out lied about a conversation that clearly never happened.“
Well, one can only assume it was an honest mistake from Trump’s end. But hey, this isn’t the first time he made such an error. If we go back to Feb. 2020, Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs won the Lombardi Trophy and Trump wanted to congratulate them. “Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on a great game, and a fantastic comeback, under immense pressure. You represented the Great State of Kansas… and, in fact, the entire USA, so very well.” Mr. Trump wrote in a tweet. “Our country is PROUD OF YOU.”
The problem here? The Chiefs play in Missouri and not Kansas State, which is next door. No wonder a section of fans understood that the Patrick Mahomes claim was a mistake. They wrote:
- “Maybe he has more important things to worry about than who coached Mahomes in college.“
Then another fan tried to make some sense of what Trump stated. But like we shared before, ‘Cover 3 College Football Podcast’ debunked any such claims.
- “Tuberville left right before Mahomes started at Texas Tech, and likely recruited him at least.“

Despite what took place, we gather that Patrick Mahomes will be quite excited to play in front of Trump, who will be the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl. Additionally, Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, who is a huge Trump supporter, will surely be happy to see him stand in support of the Chiefs.
