Will the Patriots' decision to bench Stevenson backfire, or is it the spark they need?

Here we are for another amazing Sunday Night Football. Standing in Week 5 of this 2024 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins are set to face their division rivals, the New England Patriots at the Gillette Stadium. Both teams are coming off after facing disappointing results in the last weeks, losing three in a row. The stage is set for both teams to rumble and find a winner amongst themselves, but ultimately Mother Nature might have the final say.

The match is forecasted to be cloudy for most of it with a 4% cloud cover throughout the game and a 5% precipitation rate indicating a possibility of a rain shower during the final quarter of the game. Temperature is expected to be around  67 °F with 5mph northeastern winds throughout this Sunday’s AFC East showdown.

The weather during the kickoff is expected to be humid. With 48% humidity and 9 m visibility, it surely will be tough for both sides. But the 46 °F dew point indicates comfortable playing conditions. However, the real problem for both teams might emerge if the rain shower comes earlier than expected.

In the case of Miami, things have been pretty drastic for the Dolphins without their star QB Tua Tagovailoa. They are the only NFL team that hasn’t led with the time in their hand during the game this season. Also, the Dolphins have been beaten with an average of 20 points in the last two weeks. The young Tyler Huntley seemed completely unaware of what was happening around him. This is quite natural given that he had just less than two weeks to get in sync with Mike McDaniel’s attack. Now this shaky Dolphins attack surely has a task in its hands, facing the Patriots’ defense and finding a way past them.

The Pats don’t have a prolific attack either. And David Andrews due to a shoulder injury. According to CBS’s Jordan Dajani, this game has all the characteristics of a low-scoring one. However, in front of the current unstable Dolphins, the Patriots seem to have an upper hand and are likely to win.

Patriots’ Rhamondre Stevenson sidelined ahead of the team’s clash against the Dolphins

Patriots HC Jerod Mayo has benched Rhamondre Stevenson for the team’s Week 5 clash against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. This decision from Mayo came after the RB’s disastrous performance in all four starts for the Pats.

In an interview, the HC explained his decision. He said, “I had a conversation with Rhamondre and he won’t be starting … I’ll be upfront and transparent”. Mayo further added that even though Stevenson is out of Sunday’s clash against the Dolphins, he will surely get other chances to prove himself later in the season.

Stevenson’s performance was surely hampering the team’s overall results. Overall in total, he has just 65 carries for 267 rushing yards along with a couple of touchdowns under his belt. However, ball security has been a real problem for the 26-year-old. He fumbled in all four games that he played which proved costly for the Pats. However, with him sidelined, it needs to be seen if the Pats can finally break through their three-game losing streak. Or is another heartbreaking result waiting for the Patriot fans against the Dolphins?
