It came as a shocker to Kansas City Chiefs fans as well as to the entire football world when Tyreek Hill announced that he was leaving the Chiefs. His next destination? The Miami Dolphins. Why did he leave a team that had won the Super Bowl just 2 years ago and one that was led by one of the greatest QBs of all time – Patrick Mahomes? And that too for a team with a 9-8 record in the previous season with no great name in its roster.

The Chiefs had lost the AFC Championship to the Bengals in 2021, and “Reek” was sure that he would return next year to take revenge. And yet nothing of that sort happened. Instead, Tyreek went off to a barely winning, 0.529 team. In the recent podcast I AM ATHLETE, Tyreek Hill reveals the reason behind his trade.

When the host asked the difficult question, the Cheetah took a moment to compose himself. “The idea was to never leave you know.” That’s the first thing he told his agent, Casey. And he flew down to meet the Chiefs’ management. The Cheetah didn’t want to be the highest-paid wide receiver in the entire NFL. He was just hoping that a decent part of the contract would be guaranteed. “I don’t got to be the highest paid. Just make the guarantee right and we good.

But that didn’t happen. That year, the Chiefs were facing a cash crunch, and they downright told Hill that they would not be able to give him the contract that he deserved. “You deserve at least $70 million,” the Chiefs told him, but couldn’t make him that offer themselves. Then the Jets and Dolphins called, offering him the amount he deserved. It sent the Cheetah into a dilemma. On one hand, the Jets had Adam Sandler, who he adored, but the Dolphins also had, in the past, players like Dan Marino.

He ultimately decided to go with the Dolphins because whenever he would play the wildly popular Electronic Arts-published game, Madden, he would trade himself to the Dolphins. And it looks like his bet paid off.

Tyreek Hill is at his best with Tua

During his time with the Chiefs, he had recorded, on average, 1,105 yards per year. After he switched to Tua, he recorded 1,014 yards in just 8 games! And this season has 9 games left. He also registered 1,104 yards in 9 games last year. It seems that Tua truly brought out the best in him, as what took him half a season to accomplish with Tua, the same took him an entire season with Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Moving with the Dolphins, he has also started to set new records. His 814 yards in the first game of the season broke Houston Oilers WR Charley Hennigan’s record of 812 yards. Tua made a 69-yard TD pass to Hill in the game against the New York Giants, which was a career first for the #10 player.

The upcoming match is going to be a memorable one for Hill as he will be facing his former team for the first time since he left them in 2021. Will he manage to beat his former team, or will the Chiefs be proven right in letting go of the Cheetah?
