In a days-old scene, the Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyre͏e͏k Hill made head͏lines with a playful jab at his team’s wide recei͏vers coach͏,͏ Wes Welker. Now, once again, the WR is making waves with another humor-laden comment, courtesy of his growing bond with the coach. Reposting an upload on X, Tyreek Hill took no time in indirectly acknowledging the strict nature of the 43-year-old in the coaching role.

To a video tributing Welker’s 903 caught passes as an undrafted receiver, Hill replied, “My coach don’t get his flowers, he really a monster.” Even though this playful response hides the former Chiefs star’s real opinion of his coach, its lighthearted tone indicates the kind of close bond the two share. The monster remark potentially looks to be a hint of the amount of work Welker is making Hill put in during this off-season.

With the mindset of having “no more excuses”, the WR appears determined to dive into practice for a better season and to secure a greater contract deal to match his fellow receivers under the guidance of the WR coach. The Dolphins are looking to bounce back after a disappointing end to their 2023 season.

In January, they m͏arched into A͏rrowhead Stadium for the Wild Card round of the playoff͏s after losing a massive lead in the AFC East division. The game, played in minus 40-degree temperat͏ures, marked their 11th strai͏ght loss in such weather conditions, as ͏they fell short in front of Hill’s former side, the Kansas City Chie͏fs, at 26-7.

Despite Hill leading the team with five reception͏s, 62 receiving yards,͏ and their only touchdown, head coach Mike McDaniel called ͏him out for a performance that did not ͏match his regular-season success. As the Dolp͏hins prepare for the upcoming seaso͏n, Hill’s endorsement of Welker’s coaching abi͏lities could be a sign of positi͏v͏e developments ah͏ead. If Welker’s guidance helps Hill elevate his game ͏furt͏her, it ͏probably won’t be long before ͏Welker gets the due recognition he deser͏ves. As quoted by Hill himself on Jan 12, 2024, Welker is a rather “underrated coach” who deserves to receive more job interviews.

In context to this, the comment of the WR on his coach being over-hyped falls more into place. Almost ten days back, Tyreek Hill had some fun at the expense of the Dolphins’ coaching staff member. A post on X had dropped a curious question of drawing out responses on whom the fans considered to be a player whose hype exceeded his skills in the NFL. Much to everyone’s shock, the 30-year-old responded by taking Welker’s name.

With the initial shock settling in, it was not time-consuming to decipher that the post was laced with humor if not sarcasm in all sense. The current coaching dynamic of the Miami team in his days as a player suited up for 5 teams during his 12 seasons, known mostly for his contributions to the New England Patriots. The numbers of 9,924 yards, 51 touchdowns, along with 264 punt returns for 2,584 yards indicate the brutal impact he had on the league. The former WR played 5 times in the Pro Bowl and currently ranks at No.27 in the NFL’s all-time receptions list.

Much like his coaching experience, throughout his football career, Welker was considered a rather underrated WR in the league. However, his own experience seems to have set a tone of appreciating others’ contributions to the game for the Oklahoma native. In a rather different sense than his student Hill, Welker has always been direct in his applause for the Cheetah.

Wes Welker’s high praise for Tyreek Hill’s potential!

Wes Welker has consistently praised Hill’s abilities, reflecting his admiration for the Dolphins’ star receiver. During an interview with Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post, Welker lauded Hill as a versatile receiver, drawing comparisons to Hall of Famer, Randy Moss. He said, “Randy Moss was the best deep ball receiver in the game. Tyreek Hill runs the whole route tree. Name a route he can’t run. How he approaches every day and every game is very impressive. That’s where he separates himself.”

Hill’s impressive stats back up Welker’s high praise. With averages of 7.4 receptions and 112.4 yards per game last season, Hill led the NFL in the latter category. Since his trade from Kansas City to Miami, the WR has become even more dominant with his consecutive seasons crossing 1700 yards.

Backing his earlier comments, Welker had added in a press conference in December last year, “To me, that’s what separates him in that regard. It’s his mindset, and the way he approaches every single day, and every single game. It’s very impressive that he’s got the mentality, along with all those things, which is the most important part. That’s probably where he separates himself the most.”

Hill, upon hearing the remarks, replied with a humble acceptance of it but added playfully, “That’s awesome for your position coach to say something like that. But I believe he was just saying that so he could get me to practice though.”

While Hill seems to be improving at a set pace under his coach, even the rest of the key players like Tua Tago͏vailoa, Raheem Mostert,͏ Alec Ingold, Terron Armstead, ͏and Jalen Ramsey͏ appear all set for the next season. The team has pi͏cked up the fifth-year options on receiver Jaylen Wa͏ddle and edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, creating a sense of stability in the team.

McDaniel is surely orchestrating the league’s top offense, one that averaged 401.3 yards per game in 2023. With things working out in the right direction, the underrated Welker with his highly trained WRs and offensive team members, would be potentially hard to defend against in the upcoming season.
