Mike McDaniel's height jokes—funny or just plain awkward? What's your take on his humor?

Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel is unapologetically himself, and that’s why we love him for his unique and genuine nature. Mike McDaniel is one of those few sportspersons who never take themselves seriously. With a solid sense of humor, the Miami Dolphins Coach is a complete content machine. He even doesn’t hesitate to make self-deprecating jokes. But sometimes, even the coaches miss the mark!

The Dolphins coach attended a press conference on August 7, right before the team’s training camp practice. And it is impossible for Mike McDaniel to talk with the media without saying something funny! The coach started the press conference making a joke on himself and we aren’t sure if it landed well.

Meeting the reporters, Mike started the conversation with a light note. He said, “I’m just concerned about the motivation of the first question. You guys don’t even know who’s going to ask the question or what it would be related about. So, maybe I guess should I ask the question or direct the conversation, no?” One of the reporters replied to him saying it would be fun to see what the coach would ask himself.

McDaniel thought for a while and asked, “Do I really look that short in person?” While one reporter replied, “Compared to whom?” another responded, “Compared to me?” Replying to the reporter Mice hilariously said, “Exactly!” However, the joke failed miserably and didn’t get a lot of laughs.

However, one of the reporters changed the topic while funnily saying, “Okay well as far as your question, my response would be no not really,” which finally got everyone laughing. Famous as the funniest Head Coach in the NFL, Mike McDaniel always finds a way to be quirky. Last year, when a reporter said he looked exhausted, Mike replied, “I just didn’t put on mascara.” It’s always nice to see players and coaches having fun and being entertaining, especially when they are so consumed by their games. But the HC is not always successful in getting laughs and his past interviews remind us of the same!

Mike McDaniel’s self-deprecating humor: when jokes miss the mark and height isn’t the issue

Mike has been fun to be around on the field as well. In an October 2023 match with Carolina Panthers, McDaniel could be seen joking around with offensive line coach Butch Barry. Even during the match, the HC couldn’t resist asking his team if they were having fun or not. He tried his best to keep the match sarcastic while suggesting a Dolphins player to score a touchdown, and then casually saying “baller.” Later, he drinks some water and hilariously says, “You gotta stay hydrated.“In the roller coaster ride of mood swings that the HC had, you could even catch him having an existential crisis. And, of course, he grabs a referee’s attention with a loud, drawn-out “YO, YO, YO, YO” to call a timeout. Mike truly gives us that quirky and humorous vibe!

But sometimes, the Coach finds himself in not-so-funny moments. Remember when he made a joke about his height in a press conference and didn’t receive a single laugh? Last year in November, talking to the media, Mike said, “I know what you guys are thinking. I’m bigger in person, you’re right.”  Unfortunately, the statement didn’t go well and the media left him hanging in awkward silence.

This wasn’t the first time when the media and fans misunderstood Mike’s jokes. Back in January 2023, the HC expressed his thoughts that apart from sharing the same first name with Dolphins QB Mike Glennon, the two share the same physical appearance too. McDaniel stated, “I thought there was something good in his first name, and he reminded me a lot of myself in his physical appearance.” However, people were left confused after the joke, as Glennon’s height is 6’7”, while McDaniel is 5’9″ tall.

The HC is quite normal while making self-deprecating jokes. However, his height is completely normal, matching the average height for men in the US. Well, maybe it’s just his way of getting a laugh by poking fun at himself! Despite his regular attempts to bring humor to press conferences and interviews, not all his jokes have resonated with the media or audiences, indicating that humor can sometimes fall flat. Nonetheless, McDaniel continues to embrace his comedic side, being the coolest NFL Coach.
