The New England Patriots are amidst a quarterback crisis. After Belichick benched Tom Brady’s successor, Mac Jones, there have been speculations as to who will replace him. Moreover, Bill Belichick, when asked who would start for the game against the New York Giants, simply said, “I’ve told everybody to be ready to go.” But now we can cross one name off the list of potential starters.

Most analysts predicted that Will Grier was slated to be the third-string quarterback on the depth chart heading into this weekend’s contest. However, shocking news awaited him just a couple of days before the Sunday Night Football showdown.

Adam Schefter, an NFL Insider, took to X to announce, “Patriots’ QB news: New England waived quarterback Will Grier, per source.” But to many, it does not come as a shock.

This week, the first team reps had been split between Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones, with Grier being the clear 2nd backup quarterback. Earlier in the week, Bill O’Brien stated that practice had enough snaps available for two QBs to receive plenty of reps.

“I came in at a tough time as far as reps go, so it was good to get some,” Grier had told the media a few days ago. “Even the scout-team reps I get when we do scout team are good. Just good to play ball. … If I get the opportunity, I’m just going to go play and win.” But it seems that he will not get the opportunity after all. So, what could be his next move?

QB Will tossed between teams several times in the past

On September 22, the Patriots signed Will Grier from the practice squad of the Cincinnati Bengals. The Carolina Panthers selected Grier in the 3rd round of the 2019 NFL Draft (at pick #100 overall). After spending two seasons with the Panthers, he was a two-star rookie.

Grier did not exactly “take-off” as a quarterback. He only completed 53.8% of his passes for 228 yards. He threw four interceptions and no touchdowns. The QB has only witnessed NFL game action on those two starts thus far. Following his release from Carolina prior to the 2021 season, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He spent two seasons with them, alternating between the 53-man roster and the practice squad.

Grier signed with the Bengals practice squad after being waived by the Cowboys at the conclusion of training camp this season. Given Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s season-ending injury, a reunion in Cincinnati might also be in the works. However, an important question still remains unanswered: Who will start for the Pats on Sunday?
