The Philadelphia Eagles are set to welcome quarterback Will Grier into their fold with a one-year deal. The scoop, initially broken by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday, adds a new layer to the Eagles’ strategic playbook. Grier is stepping into a bustling QB room already inhabited by Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, and Kenny Pickett. They’re now being dubbed the ‘Quarterback Factory’.

The Eagles are keen on beefing up their lineup, ensuring robust support for their starting QB, Jalen Hurts. Grier isn’t just another name on the roster. He’s very familiar with the nuances of the offensive scheme preferred by the Eagles’ new OC, making this signing a strategic fit for the team’s evolving playbook.

Will Grier isn’t a stranger to the Eagles’ new OC Kellen Moore and QB coach Doug Nussmeier. Grier’s journey in the NFL has seen him don the jerseys of the Panthers, Cowboys, Chargers, Bengals, Patriots, and now the Eagles.

His tenure with the Panthers during the 2019-20 seasons laid the groundwork before being picked up by the Cowboys, where Moore was the OC. The connection was further solidified last December when Moore, then with the Chargers, signed Grier from the Patriots’ practice squad to the squad, marking another chapter in their shared history.

So the Eagles would be bringing on board a player who’s well-versed in Moore’s strategic playbook and approach to the game. Grier’s familiarity with the system positions him as a valuable asset during the OTAs and training camp. He’ll not only be vying for a spot on the roster or practice squad but also serve to bridge knowledge gaps within the team.

Overall with the new signing, the question remains, what sort of experience does he bring to the Eagles?

Tracing Will Grier’s past as a football player

Grier’s journey began in Florida. There he showcased his skills in the 2015 season, playing six games and achieving a commendable completion rate of 65.6%, amassing 1,202 yards with 10 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions. However, a hiccup in 2016 involving a one-year suspension for violating the NCAA’s performance-enhancing drugs policy led Grier to transfer to West Virginia, where he flourished.

During his tenure with the Mountaineers, Grier’s prowess was undeniable, completing 65.7% of his throws for 7,354 yards and boasting an impressive 71/20 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His college success translated into being the 100th overall pick by the Panthers in the 2019 draft.

Grier’s professional journey has been more subdued, with limited on-field action in the NFL. His rookie year saw him start in two games for the Panthers, striving to find his footing in the league with a 53.8% completion rate, 228 yards, and a challenging 0 touchdowns to 4 interceptions record.
