It’s official. The Cowboys are out of the playoff race. After week 15, the team had a 6-8 win-loss record. With third place in the NFC East, their chances of qualifying were already slim. But fans aren’t happy. They had high hopes of qualifying for the postseason. However, those expectations went unfulfilled this year. HC Mike McCarthy’s hopes also got crushed.
In a pre-game show with 105.3 The Fan, the Cowboys coach revealed his stance on this development and said, “I’m disappointed. Really just trying to stay focused on winning this game tonight. Definitely very disappointing. We’re focused on winning.” That’s understandable. They would want to finish the season with a respectable record. The locker room has united to win week 16’s matchup against the Buccaneers.

There were problems with America’s team, even when Dak Prescott was there. You’ll remember how frustrated Jerry Jones was on his birthday. The Lions had just handed them a 47-9 loss at the AT&T Stadium. Afterward, Mike McCarthy was at a loss for words. But in the week 9 loss against the Falcons, the situation hit a new low as the QB got injured.
Prescott suffered an avulsion in his right hamstring. Again, in the week 10 game against the Eagles, they were defeated 6-34. Even Mike McCarthy could see their season falling apart, but there was nothing he could do. Jerry Jones is the real decision-maker.
The head coach’s contract is up after this season. Fans are curious if he would continue or not. The Cowboys’ owner is well known for making decisions, which are sometimes erratic.

Has Jerry Jones decided on Mike McCarthy?
While the coach took the team to playoffs in the last 3 seasons, it was hard to believe that he failed this year. However, his job isn’t necessarily in danger. According to a source, “Jerry’d like to keep him.” That would be a strategic move, too.
The controversies from the offseason marred this year. Jones and their WR CeeDee Lamb could not finalize the contract deal for the entire offseason. Apart from that, Jones also has a 3-decade experience in the league. He understands that there is no guarantee that the next coach will be a better one.

There’s a personal equation too. Mike McCarthy has found a great way of working in tandem with the owner. He has never shown any displeasure with his decisions. Hence, Jones also values this bond. Furthermore, his record hasn’t been that bad either. He took the team to 3 playoff seasons out of 5, which is a fine record in the highly competitive league.
We’ll see how things pan out after the season gets over. However, the fate of the HC depends on Jones’s decision, so we need to wait and watch.
