Mahomes went to Texas Tech University in 2014, where he began exploring baseball and football. The quarterback tried college baseball and even got drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round in 2014. However, it was Randi Martin who suggested that the QB try the field of football once. Chiefs fans must thank Mahomes; mother for convincing him to choose football over baseball. While playing football in high school, he caught the eye of a Texas Tech representative, leading to him getting committed to the university.

Therefore, the QB didn’t pursue baseball further, focusing fully on football, leaving even his college education aside. In 2015, Mahomes was quoted as saying, “Moving forward, after speaking with my family…I feel it is in my best interest to concentrate solely on football and academics this spring.”

Breaking records right from college!

Mahomes started as quarterback under head coach Kliff Kingsbury, and by 2016, he had set the record in the NCAA for most single-game yards passing and most single-game yards total offense. He represented Texas Tech as a quarterback in the Red Raiders. He wasn’t behind in academics either. Pursuing marketing, Mahomes was recognized as the Football Scholar-Athelete of the Year by the Big 12 Conference.
