Is Russell Wilson the savior the Steelers needed, or is Justin Fields being unfairly sidelined?

A 37-15 against the New York Jets!! The comeback couldn’t have been any better for Russell Wilson. In the last few days, the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ QB situation was the topic of discussion. Many doubted Mike Tomlin’s decision to start the 35-year-old veteran over young Justin Fields, who was the team’s QB1 for the first six weeks of his season, helping the team get a 3-0 start which later ended up being 4-2 before their Jets game. Although he was the main reason why Fields lost his starting lineup spot, Wilson has shared his honest message to the 25-year-old backup QB following the team’s emphatic win on Sunday.

In the post-game interview, the former Broncos QB addressed the rumors of conflict between him and the ex-Bears star for the QB1 spot. Wilson flunked off these rumors of bad blood as he said it’s nothing but “a lot of outside noise which makes us think it’s a negative thing, an internal rivalry”.

The 35-year-old went on to credit Fields for his contribution to the Steelers in the first six weeks of the 2024 season. Russell said, “I just have to give Justin Fields credit for all the things that he did, how great he has been playing”.  Wilson also mentioned being inspired by the young QB each day. He said that both have a great relationship, labeling Fields as a quarterback of the Steelers franchise.

Well following Wilson’s performance on his debut, it’s tough to picture Fields as Pittsburgh QB1 anytime soon. Although he started a bit slow as expected, the veteran QB picked up the pace and completed 16 of 29 passes, with two TDs for 264 passing yards. His team registered a massive home win at the Acrisure stadium against Aaron Rodgers and Co.

Tomlin and his men will host their NFC rivals New York Giants next on October 28, 2024. The Giants are 2-4 and are desperate for a win having lost two straight games in a row. It surely needs to be seen if Wilson can continue his Sunday’s form in the next week too. Or is there another twist in the tale waiting for the Steelers and their loyal fans? Only time will tell.

Mike Tomlin lauds Russell Wilson following team’s emphatic win on his debut

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has praised the veteran QB following their massive win against the Jets on Sunday. This was his first game in the Steelers uniform, as he was out with a calf injury since the start of this season.

In the post-game interview, Tomlin said Wilson was excellent last night at the Aricsure stadium. He thought the 35-year-old “got better as the game went on”, but Tomlin wasn’t surprised. The HC further added that it had been a long time since he last played. Tomlin believes that Russell has settled in well, as he “knocked the rust off and distributed the ball around and played well”.

After their humiliating 20-17 loss in week five against the Dallas Cowboys, the Steelers seem to have bounced back, recording two big wins against the Las Vegas Raiders in week 6 and now the New York Jets in week 7. With Wilson in the attack performing as the team hoped he would, their offense seems more potent. Tomlin will surely now hope that his team keeps up this good run as they delve deeper into the regular season.
