The new reminder of Russell Wilson‘s contract sets all things right for the QB. Russell Wilson is set to play for a league minimum of $1.2 million in his new deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Additionally, he’s getting the Broncos to pay him about $39 million to walk away in 2024. Now, in the latest update, the former Seahawks QB is said to have a perk in his contract matching fellow quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Dak Prescott.

Dov Kleiman’s post on X read, “Interesting: Despite signing for the minimum, Russell Wilson’s contract carries a no-trade clause.” According to the NFL’s official website, the no-trade clause refers to a stipulation in a contract that allows a player to reject any proposed trade in which they are involved.”

Russell Wilson getting this contract clause is remarkable because he signed for a year and is playing for rookie wages. More shocking is the fact that he is matching people like Dak Prescott, who signed a 4-year $160 million deal with the Cowboys for this additional point. It’s quite a perk to have for Russell Wilson to be able to choose the trajectory of his future.

Jared Goff, who recently inked a 4 year, 212 million extension, also has the same clause and per him, the perk gives him security. “It was mostly security,” Goff said. “You can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, and that wasn’t really the thing that was ever something extremely concerned with. The security, the no-trade clause and all that stuff — knowing that was in there. Feeling secure and knowing that I can now put that behind me and be excited about what’s to come.”

But coming back to Russell Wilson, this is not new for him as he has exercised this clause in the past.

Russell Wilson taking full advantage of his contract

2021 was the last season that Russell Wilson would spend with the Seattle Seahawks. Apparently, he was about to get traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, but he declined as he knew that he could exercise the no-trade clause in his contract. When that happened, Philadelphia fans rejoiced, but at that point one thing was clear, the Eagles were looking for an alternative for Jalen Hurts, who still hasn’t had a 4,000-yard season and didn’t win a Super Bowl after falling short to Mahomes. Wilson also denied getting traded to the Washington Commanders in the same season.

Instead, Wilson signed with the Broncos and agreed to a 5-year $245 million deal but was released 2 seasons later. He left the Denver Broncos with a historic $85 million dead money, but again, the Broncos wanted to get rid of him. The Denver team still owes him $39 million after he finished the season with an 8-9 record, ranking 3 in the AFC West. The season before that Russ failed to even come close to a winning season after the Broncos went 5-12 under his leadership.

He’s 35 now and is on a “prove it” deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. One thing to know about the Steelers is that they don’t play around, and Mike Tomlin would have no problems benching Russell Wilson if worse comes to worse. However, one thing to note here is that Tomlin is also in his last year with the Steelers and turns a free-agent coach next year. Hence, not only for Russell Wilson, it’s also a “prove it” year for Mike Tomlin as well.
