Russell Wilson had a bitter exit from the Denver Broncos, but the fact that he left a mark on the team is undeniable. One of those team members is the Broncos Wide Receiver Courtland Sutton, who witnessed his career grow in front of him as he played with the former Super Bowl Champion. Sutton had his second-best season when Wilson stepped into the building.
The Broncos WR came to the DNVR Sports podcast and spoke about the impact this 9x Pro Bowler had on him. There are countless instances of people calling the QB overweight; to this day, people still do. But Sutton seems to disagree and watching Russell Wilson prepare for upcoming games has been a privilege to him.

The WR was asked to elaborate on his time with the veteran quarterback and Sutton didn’t hold back on praises. He mentioned how Wilson had to bear the brunt of the Broncos’ shabby offense alone. But despite Sutton having a sub-par yardage to show for it, he did his career best when it came to scoring touchdowns. The receiver had 10 touchdowns last season, which is his career high.
“I’m always going to be very appreciative of the lessons that I’ve been able to learn from him, the things I’ve been able to learn from him,” said the WR and added, “Whether it was taking care of myself off the field, body wise or how to prepare for a week. Watching that dude prepare for a game was one of the most amazing things to be a part of because the dude is beyond the student of the game.”
Sutton further observed, “He was the student, the teacher, the professor, the dude had a doctorate in preparing himself for the game.” But despite Sutton’s remarks about Wilson taking care of his body, the criticism Wilson gets about being “overweight” has been blowing out of proportion.

The Broncos paid a hefty sum to Wilson to join their team, but according to some, he came a bit overweight. In November 2022, Wilson went to see a Denver Nuggets game and greeted Nikola Jokic. This caught the attention of the announcers, and they had some crass remarks to make about Denver’s then-new quarterback.
“I’ve seen him in some pictures. I saw him at the Denver Nuggets game dapping up (the MVP Nikola) Jokic. And Russell looks a little chubby to me…just a little overweight and he’s shorter. So, he kind of wears it. But regardless, he’s going nowhere. There’s immediate pressure on that Head Coach and the General Manager,” said the announcer.

However, heading into the 2023 season Wilson lost a significant amount of weight after a bad 2022 season with the Broncos where he had to face a 5-12 season. The QB has the third most rushing yards (5,307) in NFL history behind Michael Vick and Cam Newton. But the reason that he put on weight was because he wanted to be more of a pocket passer under Sean Payton’s command. But it’s obvious now that Wilson has no room in Payton’s offense.
A quick look into ESPN’s stats shows that Wilson is now 205, which is not too bad for a guy his size.
