Is the $800 million KC Current project doomed despite Mahomes' backing? What's your take?

Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, knack for sports, particularly women’s sports is known to everyone. They are co-owners of an NWSL team, Kansas City Current aka KC Current. Brittany acquired the stake first followed by the NFL MVP in January 2023. A good soccer player herself during her teens, she tries her best to promote women’s soccer. However, getting money for the game is difficult. They saw it firsthand when they took a major decision. Building a home stadium!

The Mahomes couple was informed about the difficulty of finding funds by two other co-owners. The Long Couple. Chris Long and his wife, Angie Long, found it difficult to convince investors to release funds for the CPKC stadium. Referring to the problems in finding the exact value of the team, Chris said, “There is no precedent for a women’s purpose build facility for professional sports team, so we kinda had that Achilles’ heel and people didn’t know OK, so how do you value the team and how do we think about like the projections are showing us and so it was quite a struggle.” However, both (Chris & Angie) are JP Morgan alumni. Hence, they convinced the firm to finance the $135 million stadium. The co-owners have also proved the naysayers were wrong.

KC Current’s co-owner Angie Long also revealed, “Investment in a stadium, you have to Believe in the long-term proposition of the team and professional women’s sports, the number of failed women’s leagues that have been out there for years and years is real and I think people were afraid and now they really see that opportunity and it and it feels like there’s been such a change like this is The way they think about sports and it doesn’t feel temporary or transient at all.” She is right! Now, the project has become a huge one.

The season has been outstanding for the team. The first game at the stadium was a sell-out. People turned up in huge numbers to watch their home girls battle it out. The $20 room-only tickets have a resale value of more than $100. The franchise has also made money from sponsorships and naming rights deals. The stadium has also enhanced its brand value.

In April this year, the Port Authority of Kansas City and the KC Current announced a $800 million project on 10 acres of land near the Berkley Riverfront Park. The new project joins existing ones, including the new KC Current Stadium, Bar K, and the Origin Hotel. They earlier found it difficult to build the stadium but after the overwhelming success, everyone is optimistic about new projects as well.

Have an interesting take?

Patrick Mahomes is slowly becoming an advocate of women in sports. Let’s explain why we say that.

After buying a stake in KC Current, Patrick Mahomes calls women’s sports ‘incredible’

In a stunning moment of influence and advocacy, the MVP made waves at the TIME100 Gala this past April after being named one of the 100 Most Influential People. But this wasn’t just a night for celebration; it was a platform for change. As he stood before a captivated audience, he raised his glass and made a powerful declaration: “Tonight, I’d like to raise a glass to a new era in sports. An era in which the women’s game is finally getting the attention it deserves. The real reason you should care about women’s sports is because they’re incredible.” His words resonated far beyond the walls of the gala, echoing across the sports world and igniting a renewed passion for the recognition of women’s sports.

This passion for women’s sports isn’t just a public stance—it’s personal. The MVP’s support for women athletes runs deep within his own family. His wife, Brittany, was a soccer player before they married, and his sister, Mia Randall, shines on her school’s basketball team. Even his young daughter has caught the sports bug, already showing a love for basketball. Surrounded by these inspiring women and holding the power to influence change, it’s not far-fetched to imagine him championing a women’s football league someday.

For now, though, the focus is singular. The Chiefs Kingdom has one clear goal in mind for their star quarterback: a three-peat. Can he lead them to another Super Bowl victory? The tools are all there—the arm, the vision, the leadership. But in a league where anything can happen, the pressure is on. As he balances his advocacy for women’s sports with the demands of leading his team, one question remains: Can he do it all? The world is watching, and if his past performances are any indication, he’s more than ready to rise to the challenge.
