Is Pat Sr. the unsung hero behind Patrick Mahomes' incredible success with the Chiefs?

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes usually keeps his personal life private. It showed when he refused to comment on his father’s arrest (on a DWI charge) before the 2024 Super Bowl. His only comments were, “It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family.” Is something going on between both? On Father’s Day this year, he didn’t wish his father, Pat Mahomes, on any social. Everyone is wondering if they are on good terms. However, his wife, Brittany Mahomes, has a different viewpoint.

While discussing their dating times on the WHOOP podcast and their support for each other, she credited Pat Mahomes for imparting confidence (to the QB) to deal with any situation. She said, “We got under the fire together, but he is a lot better at it than I am, maybe, because his dad played professional sports.” She’s right! We have seen the signal caller manage pressure on the field and come on top of it. And his success can be imparted to his watchful father.

Pat monitored his son since childhood, training him in baseball personally. While growing up, the QB played 3 sports: basketball, baseball (like his dad), and football. However, when the QB had to choose one sport (for his college), the father wanted his son to quit football and focus solely on baseball. That’s when his mother chirped in. She told him (Patrick) to pray and think about his choice. Ultimately, the signal caller chose football. And now, he is a shining star of the NFL, with back-to-back Super Bowls. Subsequently, he got his father’s approval as well.

Mahomes Sr. wholeheartedly supports his son on the gridiron and often goes to stadiums to cheer him. He always wears the same t-shirt and shorts to QB’s games. That’s his superstition! After the Chiefs clinched the Super Bowl in 2023, Pat hugged his son and congratulated him. NFL posted the video of the duo, calling it a wonderful moment.

How did Patrick Mahomes’ cross-sports training make him unique?

The Grim Reaper excelled in every sport he played. Under Pat’s mentorship, Patrick perfected the baseball techniques. He did. The signal caller also spent several hours on the basketball court. Only with a twist! When Patrick Mahomes became a professional footballer, he needed distinct moves. Something which could fool his rivals with ease. Hence, he combined his sports knowledge.

In the words of Pat, “You can tell by the way Patrick plays quarterback that he took pieces of his basketball, the jump throws and no-look passes, and pieces of his baseball, the different arm angles, and he put it all together in a package in football.” Well, everything’s good until he is winning. In his 7 seasons so far, the Chiefs QB has already won 3 Super Bowls. 2 of them are back-to-back trophies. With the season only a few days away, the game is on.

All eyes are on him. His father pleaded guilty to DWI charges on the 27th of August. While the QB must be tense about his father’s future, he cannot let his vision get clouded. Can he deal with the expectations of a 3-peat? It’s knocking on his door. But he is well-versed in the pressures of the game.
