The NFL world found itself caught up in the US election fever, with the Mahomes family at the center of it. First, it was Brittany Mahomes, the wife of the Chiefs’ electric QB, courting controversy over an Instagram like for Donald Trump’s 2024 GOP platform. Then we saw Patrick’s mother, Randi on Monday at the Arrowhead Stadium, endorsing Trump. In return, Trump has expressed his liking for Brittany, but when it comes to picking the best NFL quarterback at the moment, Mahomes isn’t the name on the mind of the newly elected President.
Trump’s run for the White House saw him indulge in unconventional campaigning methods such as appearing on popular podcasts. He showed up at the popular Joe Rogan Experience on October 25 and a day before his victory was officially announced Trump had a chat with legendary Bill Belichick. Yeah, the same Bill who probably has a playbook thicker than the New Testament.
The 47th President of the USA discussed the state of sports in the country and had everything from college athletics to the PGA and the NFL on the agenda. As the conversation turned to football, Trump talked about how sometimes the top draft picks can falter and not perform according to expectations, he mentioned, “No.2 (Draft pick) is doing great,” on the“Let’s Go!” podcast.

He talked about how certain players who are excelling in their respective sport, deserve to make more money and added, “Look at Washington, that’s a great find. Although, he was very highly thought of, but look at how he is playing. So you say he should be making (more money), because he’s probably the best quarterback in football right now, in terms of just stats. So, he should be making pretty much what the others do, but you cannot do that, because he’s got a contract and he will have his day, you hope.”
Trump is of course referring to Washington Commanders, No.2 Draft Pick, Jayden Daniels, who is signed to a four-year $37.7 million rookie-scale contract. Under the NFL’s rookie wage scale, Daniels’ full $37.7 million is guaranteed and carries a fifth-year option for the 2028 season. But how good has he been the “best quarterback” in his rookie season as Trump claimed?
The 2023 Heisman winner has 163 completions on 228 attempts so far. His success rate of 71.5% ranks among the best QBs in the league and has thrown for nine touchdowns, run for four more, and has just two interceptions. Overall, he is ranked third in the league with a 76.1 QB rating. His performances have led the Commanders to their first 7-2 start since 1996 and sit top of the NFC East.
During the conversation, Trump talked about how at times even the guys drafted in the first round flop like a fish out of water and then there is the guy at the 49ers, Brock Purdy, who was picked last in the 2022 Draft and is excelling for the franchise. Last month during an interview with Barstool Sports’ Bussin’ With The Boys’ Trump talked about Purdy.
“(Purdy) is a great story, he’s like the last drafted, and they put him in, and he just moved the team. He’s really good,” he said. Interestingly, Purdy was picked last as the 262nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft but has become an integral part of the 49ers team. Well, you might have noticed one common thing in both of Trump’s football-related conversations a month apart- no mention of Patrick Mahomes, despite his family’s unrelenting support for him.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Trump's praise for Jayden Daniels a genuine nod or a political play for NFL fans?

In fact, Brittany had to face online backlash for his apparent support of Trump. This led the Republican to thank her for “strongly defending” him. Later during an appearance on Fox & Friends on September 11, he went on to say, “Well, I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better, if you want to know the truth,” after he came to know of Taylor Swift’s backing of Kamala Harris.

Moreover, the Mahomes-Trump connection was in full flow at the Arrowhead, before the Chiefs took on the Bucs on Monday.
Randi Mahomes’ endorsement of Donald Trump
Now, shifting gears a bit, let’s chat about Randi Mahomes, who’s making waves as the mama bear of Kansas City Chiefs‘ superstar Patrick Mahomes. So, Randi shows up at a game, decked out in Chiefs gear, rocking a “Make America Great Again” hat like it’s her touchdown celebration. She’s there shouting, “Let’s do it!!!” and fans are eating it up; it’s like a mega political tailgate party!

On the other hand, Patrick Mahomes has remained neutral in public, saying he only wants to “inform people to do their own research,” so that they make an informed decision. With Trump’s win in the presidential elections, there will be some celebration in the Mahomes household as well.
