While Russell Wilson has caused an injury scare in the Steelers training camp, Justin Fields had been killing it and people had a lot of expectations from him. Alas, Fields didn’t pass his trial by fire, and he left the Steel City fans disappointed. Will that become a precedent for Russ getting the starting job come week 1? Almost certainly.
Tom Pelissero took to The Rich Eisen Show and talked about the development at the Pittsburgh Steelers boot camp. Per him, the Steelers are bound to their “organizational philosophy” and will stick with Wilson no matter what. Despite Russell Wilson’s underwhelming past with the Broncos, Mike Tomlin is still all in on Wilson, and he might retain his “pole position.”
“With Russell Wilson, when Mike Tomlin has been saying since the spring that Russ is in ‘pole position,’ there’s a level of respect that Mike Tomlin gives to veteran players in the locker room here which has all made me believe that one way or another, the likely scenario here was that Russ at least gets to start the season and Tomlin will stick with him for as long as he humanly possibly can,” said Pelissero.

A couple of days ago, news broke out that Russell Wilson sustained a calf strain while pushing a sled in the training camp. While fans expressed discontent with the Steelers’ new strength coaching staff for letting Russ engage in a taxing exercise, the QB said that it was nothing major. More so, he can’t wait for the regular season to begin.
“I’ve been working every single day; even the days I was a little bit lighter in team [drills], I was doing all the fundamental work. Obviously, over the last two weeks, I’ve really been building up a lot more reps in team drills. That’s been great. I’ve been full [practice] for the last several days. I’m feeling good. I’m ahead of schedule. I’m just staying the course,” said Wilson via Chris Adamski.

Will Mike Tomlin's leadership be the key to Russell Wilson's success as the Steelers' starting QB?

Wilson could be doing far worse, but he’s not. Mike Tomlin also thinks that it’s not a major issue that will sideline Wilson in the future. Speaking of sidelining, Justin Fields might be the one who has pressure on him. There’s a quarterback battle going on in the team. In the past, Fields expressed his desire to not sit on the bench for the whole season. But the last game against the Texans might have taken away from his credibility.
Did Justin Fields sabotage himself to give Russ the ‘pole position’?
Everything was going great until Justin Fields started fumbling the ball. One of them might be on Nate Herbig. That fumble led to the loss of 4 yards and on the next drive, it happened again. However, Fields played for three series, completing 5 of his 6 passes, leaving the fans longing for a touchdown.

“I thought he did some nice things,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “But obviously he was a component of the C-Q exchange, and from my perspective that’s dual responsibility on the center and the quarterback. It negated a lot of good things going on in those first couple of drives.”

Back at the training camp a couple of days ago, Justin Field surprised Mike Tomlin with his athleticism and work ethic. “I’ve been surprised by his athleticism to be quite honest with you. I’ve seen video, obviously, but to see it up close and personal every day, he’s a special athlete, man. He can do a lot.”
But those qualities did not translate onto the football field and Russell Wilson isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. The Steelers will be going against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field and there’s more than a week left to prepare for the standoff. Reports say that Justin Fields will most likely start the next preseason game as well. Do you think he can ball out?
